It's ridiculous that your organization, called a "non-profit organization" makes a deal with Verisign to increase the price of the .COM domains to receive money. I don't know if you remember what the purpose of your "non-profit organization" was but even a blind could see this is no one of them. You're limiting the freedom of internet by making .COM domains restricted for a certain group that will pay for them.

Also, these sort of deals work against the spirit of the Internet, which originally was about openness... a time when prices of domains was very much cheaper and technical specifications for everything were open. Now we have secret deals made affecting everyone, done behind closed doors. How did that happen?

I am a registrant of a .com domain name. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest.

According to my current knowledge, the .COM TLD is the TLD of choice for most business owners given it is yet the most familiar among internet users. Among other things, and albeit subtle, it assists in building trust between online businesses and their customers. Internet businesses take on and maintain a plethora of business expenses in order to retain a professional online presence. Price increases to TLD's (especially .COM), incrementally or otherwise, places that much more of a strain upon small businesses and other modest (but legitimate) enterprises that seek to explore the worth of capitalism over the world wide web. While many of the details and responsibilities of the parties involved may yet elude my awareness and comprehension, as a small business owner, I request that if at all possible, the .COM TLD does not undergo an initial or renewal price increase (incrementally or otherwise). I am concerned about the content of Amendment 3, with the repercussions of restricting the freedom of speech on the Internet, with the potential increases in costs of .com top level domains. Corporations will only take more control of the Internet with their ability to pay higher domain registration fees. Please reconsider the far-reaching implications of this amendment, and allow the registration of .com domains to be available for a reasonable price. I am also concerned about the potential conflict of interest that Verisign would put itself into as a registrar, even indirectly. Internet security is already challenging, and by keeping their services separate from registration, there is additional protection that would be lost with their expansion to becoming a registrar. Good day I do not understand the reason for a 7% increase per annum over 8 of the next 10 years. Surely inflation in the markets where you operate is around 2%. So this increase is more than 3 times what should be reasonable. It is really tough to run an online business and run away expenses makes it all much more difficult. I suppose you want to take this online opportunity and do it with what the USA did with insulin. You know insulin was donated by its founder, so except for the production cost there should be no exceptional markups on the cost of the product. Like with insulin, if you get on this wagon, in 30 years only the rich will be able to own or run an online business. Surely the internet was meant for everybody. Absolutely cover your costs, but please don't destroy small businesses with greedy increases. Regards Noline Ludick

If the information I have received is accurate, ICANN and Verisign have agreed to significant changes to the contract that governs your relationship, changes which will have dramatic consequences for internet users by allowing Verisign to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years. ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, I nevertheless hereby register my objection to your deal. Verisign agreeing to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives (with no clarity about how ICANN will spend the money or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure) is no justification for the important effect you are forcing on internet users. I would ask that there be full disclosure as to what the $20M increase in payment to ICANN is to be used for, and why the annual cost increases in existing domain prices are required? It would see a public comment period and full disclosure is warranted for what is arguable the management of the “public domain”. Thank you, Marc Parsons What's happening? Last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, we are focused on leading the fight against price increases that will harm our customers (and the Internet as a whole). This is a crucial time to raise our voices given that .COM domains make up 40% of all registered domain names online. What does this change mean? Wholesale registries charge providers a set fee per domain name per year. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Why is ICANN doing this? Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to supportICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. ...

The rise in prices proposed for .COM domain names will have a devastating effect on me and my business interests. As a frequent purchaser of domain names, I will be much less likely to try new ventures if the price continues to go up and up unchecked. I currently own about 10 .COM domain names for various projects, from graduate school to freelance jobs to personal portfolios. The prices as they currently are make it easy for me to purchase one, try out the project, and maintain or discard as suits my needs and those of my potential clients. This proposed action hurts freelancers and small business owners at the expense of large corporations. Good morning, as a .com domain user I find the price increases proposed and worked with Verisign to be in detriment of users like me who mainly blog, put out content for many people to improve and support their daily lives. On the other hand I would like you to show me who within the regular American population receives a increase of a 7% annually in their paycheck for 4 year straight? Sound ludicrous to me more so, when the increases will continue after a two year freeze for another 3 years. On the other hand what is ICANN doing specifically with the extra 20$ million dollars received for this agreement that benefits the users in terms of the security and stability of the domain name systems? The most significant change is that Version can operate as a domain registrar which will place Verisign in a very advantageous position since this company controls almost 80% of the registrar pricing for the domain names that will compete directly with all domain registrars. Clearly an unfair market advantage harming competition. I do not want this to happen because many .com owners will be harmed with this unilateral decisions for many years to come. Hi, I'm writing to pitch in my opinion on the recently proposed changes which will result in a price hike on .COM domains. I think this is NOT a good idea. This TLD has been the top choice of nearly half the webpages on the web. That speaks of its popularity, and how much importance it holds. One of the key traits is its accessibility and affordability, especially compared to most other TLDs. Individuals have been able to make use of their .COM websites and open up their content to the world much more easily than other lesser known domains, and the newer, more expensive, custom domains (like .DANCE, .XYZ, etc). With the proposed changes, you'll be killing the easy access that public has enjoyed, throwing in a lot of confusion, all over just another business deal. We consider ICANN to be more than just another corporation out to make profits off of people's compulsion. Please do the right thing and nip this price hike plan in the bud. I do not agree that the proposed amendments to the .com TLD will benefit the internet as a whole or myself. It does however benefit a rather small portion of an already overly wealthy population. The existing rules were put in place to protect the internet. They were thought out carefully and weighed. Do not remove them.
