I understand that last month ICANN announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign and that these changes were made in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Why wasn’t the wider community consulted? I’m informed that Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years and that the contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Is this true? I also understand that alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. We all know how challenging it is to run a business. There are just so many expenses/bills to pay. Some monthly and others yearly. Buying a .COM domain name at its current price is high enough for someone who is trying to run a small online business. Why on earth would ICANN choose to increase it without thinking about the negative effects it will have on internet users? Greed is a terrible thing and I can tell you ICANN, you're building a bad reputation for yourselves, a terrible reputation that might stand against you for hundreds of years. The bad rap about the corrupted governments around the world is enough for our shoulders, we choose to come online and have peace of mind at least, now, ICANN is trying to kick us out with high priced .COM domain names. Please be selfless. We will all die one day and no $20million will follow us to our graves.

With reference to the subjest quoted above. I personally feel this is not a good idea and will cause a lot of .COM users including myself whose been a .COM user for the past 5 years find it hard to keep up with the price increase that will go on for a decade and obviously beyond. ICANN and Verisign made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. It would have been very helpful if consultation and engagement of users was put into consideration before settling for such an imperative decision. I hope the two parties can seat down and reconsider this decision. Also considering the fact that .COM consists of 40% of domains registered on the internet. That tells how many businesses will be affected in the coming years. It will also be fair enough to explain to us the users how the $20 million dollars will be will be spent and who will ensure that the funds are well spent. Regards, Kennedy

I understand that the .COM market is saturated, but there are many more opportunities out there. People are already getting used to using different domain names like .shop .academy ….etc. Why increase prices for .COM, when instead they should be decreasing? I agree with one of the other comments I saw about the people that are registering domains without using them, only to sell them at a completely unreasonable price. I assume you guys are getting a huge commission as well, but I think we live in an era where you have more to gain if you are getting along with the crowd, instead of being against it. I oppose Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. I believe that allowing wholesale prices for .com domains to rise 72% over 12 years, which is far more than the rate of inflation and also far more than Verisign's underlying costs of maintaining the registry could possibly increase by, will dramatically hurt the internet ecosystem. It will especially hurt small website operators, like myself, and will discourage internet users from creating blogs and personal pages, with the end result of reducing democratization of the internet. Verisign reported a 69.4% operating margin in Q1 2019, so they clearly do not need the extra revenue from this price hike. ICANN has granted a monopoly over .com to Verisign and ICANN has a duty to every internet user on the planet to carefully regulate this monopoly to prevent abuse by Verisign. The only conscionable thing to do right now is to freeze wholesale .com prices and re-evaluate 5-10 years from now. A policy that allows price increases tracking the rate of inflation (but no higher) may make sense in the future, but right now Verisign is already collecting far more from their .com monopoly than any company would be able to in a competitive market. It's simply not right to allow them to raise prices at this time. - Neo

This is a shameless attempt at ripping off users, both corporate (who might mostly not be very affected, as others noted) and private. ICANN is supposed to be a non-profit organization, but this sudden and substantial price increase agreement does not bode in any way with a non-profit policy. ICANN's price policy should be focused on the benefit of users, not increasing the profits of one reseller (I wonder who and how much they had to bribe in order to get this permission to rip us off). To whom it may concern, The proposed changes to the VeriSign and .com commercial arrangement, specifically the radical increases proposed in "8 out of 10 years" are completely unacceptable. .com domains were a symbol of the internet generation - a way to build business online. Hello, as a student and entrepreneur I find it very troubling that you wish to increase the .com domain. In ensuring your businesses success you need a viable internet presence. Without this you will most likely have a much harder time. This combined with studies is intolerable and will result in higher stress than necessary. Hello, ICCAN I just learned about .COM domain proposal of raise prices every year. I don't think this is good news for most part users. If Verisign raises its prices unilaterally, it will inevitably drive the trend of rising prices of others top-level domain. This series of reactions will make the cost of setting up a website, especially for personal blog sites. This is likely to cause many websites to shut down due to the heavy burden of domain names. What is more frightening is that the price increase will increase the number of speculators and disrupt the market order. This is not what we want to see, we hope to see a more accessible registration price. With the increasing popularity of the Internet today, we should lower the threshold for website building, not raise him. Naturally, the .COM domain name as a representative shouldn't increase prices. We respect this proposal, but in today's environment, this proposal seems inappropriate. I hope ICCAN will take a closer look at the current background and the applicability of this document.
