I am a .com domain owner and I am completely against this large price increase over the next several years. I am also at a loss as to why this is being done in the benefit of Verisign and ignoring the millions of small customers impacted. Large businesses may be able to absorb the cost without flinching but its an impact to others that provide services through their domains with low returns.

Allowing .com domains to have their prices raised so significantly for such unclear and potentially unethical reasons puts the authority and reputation of ICANN at great risk. This amendment would greatly harm public opinion on ICANN, as .com domains are incredibly wide spread, and millions of people would be forced to pay more. A large public rejection of this deal will likely not hit until it’s clearly negatively effecting people all around the world. It’s simply making it even harder to access resources on the internet. The internet is not a private bank, it is a public space that should not cost large amounts of money to participate in. The unclear, and possibly greed influenced motives behind this amendment, if it is passed, would shine a very clear light on where ICANN lies as far as integrity is concerned.

I oppose Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. I believe that allowing wholesale prices for .com domains to rise 72% over 12 years, which is far more than the rate of inflation and also far more than Verisign's underlying costs of maintaining the registry could possibly increase by, will dramatically hurt the internet ecosystem. It will especially hurt small website operators, like myself, and will discourage internet users from creating blogs and personal pages, with the end result of reducing democratization of the internet. Verisign reported a 69.4% operating margin in Q1 2019, so they clearly do not need the extra revenue from this price hike. ICANN has granted a monopoly over .com to Verisign and ICANN has a duty to every internet user on the planet to carefully regulate this monopoly to prevent abuse by Verisign. The only conscionable thing to do right now is to freeze wholesale .com prices and re-evaluate 5-10 years from now. A policy that allows price increases tracking the rate of inflation (but no higher) may make sense in the future, but right now Verisign is already collecting far more from their .com monopoly than any company would be able to in a competitive market. My reasons are as follows 1. Verisign, as the domain name controller, controls 80% of the domain name pricing. It may initially attract consumers to buy with prices. After most consumers buy from them, it will monopolize the domain name price so that the domain name price is as high as they want. 2. Verisign agrees to pay ICANN an additional $ 20 million over five years to support ICANN's plan for the security and stability of the domain name system. Does Verisign explain why this is the case? VeriSign only manages 2 of the world's 13 root servers. Why is Verisign paying to ICANN? Not other companies? 3.ICANN accepts $ 20 million from Verisign, but only explains the purpose, and does not disclose any plans to use the money transparently. How should the money be used? How to ensure that it is really used in this way.

Hello, Frankly, I am very worrisome of the direction ICANN is going in lieu of the recent backdoor deals they are making with Verisign, Inc. How can domain owners like myself be sure that prices will not rise significantly higher than the market’s actual demand in the coming years? In the least, deals with Verisign could remain transparent from the get go. If domain owners like myself are truly rendered powerless when it comes to domain prices established between ICANN and Verisign, it’s impossible for me to support such companies when their appears to be a lack of free market competition at play. I wish I had other options to offer my business but remain hopeful that a moral course of action will be carried out by ICANN and Verisign, Inc. The increased prices would hurt individual .COM domain owners and small businesses, creating a barrier and reducing their valued and longstanding internet presences. This amendment would reduce the trust that the public has placed in the domain name system and could potentially lead to the fracturing of the system and the creation of competing systems. I am a domainer (I invest in domain names as a business). I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. I will be forced to sell-off many of my domains if a price-hike were to take place. Dear ICAAN, On the outside looking in, this deal looks dirty. Large amounts of money changing hands, discussions behind closed doors, a company siding with big business and a willingness to disregard its own founding principles. Whichever way you try and spin this, it is a proposal which in no way can be seen as a positive for either ICAAN or the global community. It supports an attempt to monopolise the .COM business at the expense of both those who use it and of your reputation. Reducing transparency, hoodwinking their customers and prioritising the bottom line did not work well for Volkswagen. Simply put, implementing this proposal will go against everything you stand for. It's difficult to understand how you can, on one hand, preach transparency and fairness and, on the other, not only practice the opposite but also genuinely attempt to justify it.
