Simply changing your terms with Verisign in secret thus giving them even more power to control the domain market is shady. I say this because you essentially give them free will to increase .com pricing for the next 8 of 10 years. There’s no incentive for them not to try to get as much out of them as they can? Why, well because first this deters people from squatting on domains. Why do people squat? Well like me maybe they had an idea but just haven’t had the time to put it to use. Perhaps they think it’s a cash cow? However, in reality it just means it opens verisign up to more of the gray practices. Like the registrar reserving “popular” names and charging premiums. However, this is all 100% contradictory to the internet. The internet is supposed to be an open global economy. Where anyone and everyone is essentially on an equal playing field. Just like net neutrality, giving registrars more Ways to turn the screws means that’s just what they will do. They will see this as a business opportunity and milk their customer (all .com owners) for more and more money. I know our global DNS infrastructure is complex and expensive. However as everyone gets more greedy with time the quality of the internet and the openness it once represented continue to vanish. Everyone wants to push people to paid services. When they can’t they just do this, increase the fees they can. What is ICANN going to do with this money? How is this contribution from .com going to solve any problems that charging hundreds of thousands to make your own TLD and then registry fees from? This is two companies trying to do a symbiotic cash grab and going after the largest cash cow of all... .com. Why not impose a flat fee first like we did with .net? I’ll gladly drop all of my personal .com’s in favor of a number of other TLDs. I’m sure many more would too. How does that help improve anything? — Thanks, Brandon

If raising the cost of domains is added to the struggle then I foresee this having detrimental effects on me and many small businesses. Hi, This is what happens when a monopoly is in force. You never get enough. I think its time to go to congress with this greed issue. And if we can get some action from congress, it will avoid having to babysit you and prevent things like $250K without public reason. I hope you will avoid this unethical plan. The results would be catastrophic if carried out. If you do carry out this plan of increase, millions of Internet users will be forced to not only delete their ownership of tens of millions of domains but will have no choice but to fight your greed in the public arena. The approval for you to police the Internet needs to be strongly reviewed. Hi there, It would be great if you can allow transparency through discussions with the public and other sale agents regarding the purchases and worth + prices of domain names and how the system works. Discussion behind closed doors to jack the prices up of .COM domains seems an extremely money hungry strategic move (knowing they are the most common) to benefit your growth and earnings rather than the overall benefit of basically the world. It’s an age where we all rely on the internet, to get things done, to be heard, and also nowadays for safety and our wellbeing. Having everyone pay for that extra mile to write a .COM in what is basically their house/home on the World Wide Web is ridiculous. What if an elderly only remembers websites to have .COM but a business/organisation had to change it due to costs, and they suffer a negative effect from that? I can keep going on with scenarios but let’s not waste time. Let it be discussed not just implemented. It effects the bigger picture for many individuals more than you realise. With this amendment, and a terribly poor economy as a result of trade wars and disease outbreak, consumers who depend on online commerce require ever more to keep costs low. To whom it may concern, I have been recently made aware that ICANN and Verisign made changes without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. As an owner and user, I can admantly say that the changes proposed in their contract are outrageous and will have a massive negative impact on the Internet as a whole. For starters, the ten year annual 7% price increase is absurd. Moreover, the contract allows for other price increases for certain extraordinary situations. This is completely unacceptable, as this has the potential to skyrocket the price. This lack of regulation, places too much power in the hands of these two parties, with no real benefit to the community or Internet users around the world. Moving on, the contract also references Verisign agreeing to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN’s initiatives regarding the security and stability of the domain name system. Why is Verisign doing this? How will ICANN spend the all this money? And who will ensure that the funds are properly spent? Again, this is completely unregulated and it needs to be corrected to the negative impact this will create. This nex tpoint is about how the new contract will allow Verisign to operate its own registrar, except for selling .COM domain names. But to circumvent this, Verisign is allowed to act as a reseller of .COM domains, through another registrar. Effectively, the company that controls 80% of domain names will also compete with domain registers and maximizing their control of domain name pricing to the detriment of other competing registrars. This might result in lower prices to consumers, but having fewer registrars will harm competition, choice, and domain name services. Verisign’s registrar could also use its position to charge higher prices to consumers, and at the same time raise registrar prices. Once again, this needs to be regulated before the industry is monopolized. Lastly, as detailed on "Standing Up to ICANN to Keep Domain Prices in Check" and "pricecaps.org," over 3,500 comments were submitted in support of price controls for the .ORG, .INFO, and .BIZ TLDs. Only six comments supported removing price controls. ICANN discounted the comments that were in favor of maintaining price caps. A number of the comments were submitted using an online tool, which caused the comments to be discounted as “spam” by the ICANN Ombudsman. ICANN removed the price caps, primarily relying upon a biased preliminary analysis from 2009 by an economics professor that did not reference any data. This unethical behavior behavior is in direct retaliation of those looking to keep the price caps, which only further evidences the need to regulate the actions of this party. The changes in the contract between ICANN and Verisign is appalling and insulting to the entire internet community. This agreement is completely out of line and needs to be corrected. I am opposed to biased price increases targeting .com domains. If any price increase takes place, it should apply to all domains equally and with significant justification. This is a public service and should not be allowed to profit. The only reason it exists today is based on that understanding. Involvement of Verisign, a for profit corporation, is unacceptable. Like any other commercial endevour, this will result into corporate tyranny and censorship. Will Verisign allow domains such as "verisign-crimes.com"? Will they stop people from getting domain names simply because they disagree with them? Of course they will. Look at what every commercial tech company does. Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. all de-platform people and commit massive acts of censorship. Furthermore, they can increase costs overnight and without the ability of a small business or individual to ever influence them. It creates a monopoly around Verisign. Large corporations couldn't care one bit about the costs of domains because to them, there is no difference between $300,000 and $30. For me, I can no longer compete when I start getting domain names in excess of $10. Our entire business model is centered on offering smaller websites for a few dollars and Verisign's price hikes will make me charge as much as larger companies like GoDaddy, which offer inferior services at higher prices. I realize that people will say that it's only a few dollars increase. But, the problem is that every aspect of my business is increasing and every single one of these increases is killing my business. Technologically speaking, domain services are not rocket science. Domains shouldn't really cost more than $0.01 when the cost is divided amongst all the players. Instead of prices going down, they now are going up! Keanu Lazar

I own several .com domains and am willing to let many of them go and sell off the others to stop being a verisign / icann customer. I am opposed to the increase in price. Many of us in the .com world are very effective at marketing and SEO. A total loss of enough customers can cost you more than the entire planned profit margin of the price increase here. This is how we will resist.

Hello, My comments on the proposed .COM amendments: The proposed amendments allow too high of an increase in price. Especially because there is no other option for small family domains like mine who have invested into their domain names, and cannot afford the time and money to switch. The huge economies of scale of domain names combined with the increased computer power and efficiency advances of newer computer hardware, should mean only lower costs, more profit and a better product for Verisign. If Verisign are requiring such higher increases to provide better security and other improvements then that is their own problem. They are being too wasteful, so why should the world have to pay for Verisign inefficiencies? Regards, Carey.

Hello, I was notified by my registrar that you plan to increase the cost for .com, .net, .org and other domain extensions. I beg you to reconsider your decision as this will affect my ability to continue to operate my small business. I can't afford to pay to rent a business location as inflation, taxes gasoline and food prices have increased dramatically in the last few years. The increase in price cost for TLDs will exacerbate my ability to provide the affordable service I give my clients. It's just too many price increases from all directions. Please support small businesses like mine and keep free enterprise affordable for us and those starting their own businesses. I don't really want to close my doors and depend on government stipends. To whom it may concern: I have registered several .com domain names, and I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. The proposed dramatic price increases will significantly negatively impact small business owners; large corporations, of course, will not mind the change. I am against Verisign's involvement in paying ICANN significant sums of money without any clarity as to how ICANN can use the money. I am against Verisign being given the ability to increase the wholesale prices of .COM domains to registrars every year for the next 8 out of 10 years, without any clarity as to what conditions it is right or proper for them to do so. Verisign has also not made a convincing case as to why increasing prices for domain management, given that management costs (absent of actual hosting etc) should only be administrative, should scale roughly linearly with the number of domains registered, and does not require significant innovation; if anything, as the internet matures, these prices should be _going down._ Increases to prices will only make domain name squatting, a poisonous trade that stifles internet innovation, an even more lucrative market. Additionally, I am against ICANN making these kind of changes in secret, without consulting feedback from the internet. The internet as it exists today is primarily the result of group action and good-faith consensus building; ICANN's actions in this space recently have eroded the trust that make the internet function. ICANN has been granted the broad powers it has with the understanding that it will operate in the public interest; but recent ICANN behaviors seem a lot like capture by large, wealthy, incumbent corporations and groups. Take note: behavior like this price change, were it to go through, will have me writing letters to my Federal representatives about ICANN's suitability in being trusted to manage the DNS. This amendment seems, to me, to be a thinly-veiled money grab with a short-sighted cash injection for ICANN at the expense of all holders of .COM domains. Your justification for this move is shrouded in complicated language that fails to convince me of its necessity or importance (beyond your desire, presumably, to obtain $20 million dollars per year essentially from all domain name holders). "work together on additional initiatives related to enhancing the security, stability, and resiliency of the Domain Name System (DNS)"? Sorry, but I see nothing tangible in this vague generalization. I've noticed that almost all terrible things for the open world are shrouded in arguments of "security" and "stability". Guess what? Innovation is often at odds with those concepts, and it's hard for me to see how this is going to increase creator participation on the internet. I was recently informed by namecheap.com (my domain registrar) that ICANN made changes in secret with Verisign, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users that effects the .com domain pricing. As a small business owner that operates on very low margins this has an impact on my business. I would like to know exactly why these price increases are being put in place and what benefit, as a small business owner, it will have to me. I'm sure the general "the cost to run these services goes up every year" will be one of the reasons, but I would think in the face of ever decreasing prices in technology, this doesn't justify the significant increase in pricing that appears to have been put in place. I can see a 10% increase which would be a significant revenue increase considering how many .com domains there are. Dear Sir/Madam, I was recently notified of your upcoming agreement to raise the prices of domain names registered by 7% annually. Having been an avid customer, purchasing three domain names within the span of ten days, I would advise you to adhere to your own mission, which until now you have upheld diligently, in the words of your founder and philanthropist, Ms. Esther Dyson: “It is a nonprofit public benefit corporation organized under the California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for charitable and public purposes.” With such an influential business and .COM provider built upon the basic principles of Corporate Ethics, ICANN should continue to endure as a highly commended and respected embodiment of the values envisioned by your founder: in your own admirable words, and more importantly, your resulting actions. To ICANN Representatives, I am opposed to your .COM domain registration fee increase proposals. You may feel that this is "Free Enterprise" at it's finest! Making secret decisions with the monopoly between your organization (ICANN) and Verisign, is not in the interest of .COM domain registered uses on the internet. Price increases of 7% per year over an 8-10 year period is what I call price gouging! I can understand the need for increasing prices to some degree, but the increases that you are proposing is a ripoff to the 40% of domain name registers on the internet. As our good Swedish environmental activist friend Greta Thunberg would say, "HOW DARE YOU!! Decision makers in your organization should rethink your price increase proposals. The internet should stay affordable for its users. Any charge in the infrastructure, e. g. changing .COM domain prices feels like an assault on the users.
