It's obvious to all that this cash grab is intended to replace lost revenue from 1) increased competition in the TLD space, and 2) increased competition (i.e. Let's Encrypt) in the SSL/TLS certificate space. While I sympathize with the challenges of being the disrupted industry incumbent, I have zero sympathy for attempting to force the losses on the entire Internet community when for years all the profits have been captured by Verisign. Privatized profits and socialized losses is no way to run a business. Unless you own the business, of course. Then it's fantastic. The rest of us should politely and firmly decline this bullshit.
