Price gauging by a monopoly is unethical and legally questionable. Top-level domain names are a de-facto public utility and monopoly, so prices should be tightly regulated. If ICANN fails to do this, as is evidently the case considering what happened to .org and is now happening to .com, the responsibility should be transferred to another authority sooner rather than later. What is currently going on is rent-seeking and abuse of power, and should have consequences for the people in charge at ICANN.
