I totally agree what CEO Michael Keegan said from Yellow Pages Directory Inc. " As the owner of many domain names, I do not want to see price-caps removed and believe price increases would be unfair. Further, legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different and registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. " Prices need to be set. The markup on domains is basically pure profit anyhow. I am writing in opposition to the proposed changes which remove price caps for the .info TLD. The internet exists in its current state because it has always been an open platform for innovation and creativity. Part of the internet's openness has resulted from pragmatic, responsible management by organizations such as ICANN, which has kept prices reasonably low and critical services and infrastructure accessible to just about anyone. As we've seen with the recent creation of a plethora of new TLDs, the absence of price caps will allow, and in some cases encourage, price gouging and extortion. Domain squatting and secondary domain sales have become a blight on the internet, hampered the proliferation of ideas, and hamstrung the internet's growth to some extent, and if domain names are only available to organizations with deep pockets this will only get worse, leaving the internet less open and innovative. As an unrestricted domain, .info has served a vital purpose as an alternative to the .com and .org TLDs, offering a place for a wide variety of domains with a wide range of purposes. Nevertheless, allowing registrars to raise prices on this TLD may cause material harm to individuals and organizations which have owned and operated .info domains for decades, and would be tantamount to extortion. I would hope that, should this policy change go into effect, a class action suit would be brought against both ICANN and the registrars responsible for managing and selling .info domains to replace the price caps, and enact a suitable punishment for the extortion of nearly six-million current registrants. As the owner of two non-commercial .info domains, may I strongly object to the proposed removal of price caps on domain registration. Anything I put up is for the information of interested people only. I make nothing from my website and don't want to. My only return is the occasional email thanking me for the information, and that's fine. But I certainly don't wish to pay commercial-level fees for what is essentially a hobby. If the Internet is to be regarded as a means of facilitating communication, it shouldn't be hampered by cost barriers at rates greatly in excess of the actual cost of providing the service. I respectfully make the following comments. Legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs and should be treated that way. Legacy TLDs are what the internet was built on. They are essentially a public trust. They are very different than new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private parties. Registrants of these legacy extensions should be entitled to price predictability & stability. Advancements in technology should be driving the cost of operating a registry down, yet prices keep going up? Removing price caps is unfair to the millions of domain registrants. They will have no price protections. Every registrant will be at the complete mercy and whims of the registry. ICANN is supposed to represent a "bottom up, consensus-driven multistakeholder model". ICANN should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN should be looking out for the .info registrants. There is no "public benefit" justification to these changes. It is just a handout to business at the expense of registrants’ rights and protections. Where are the protections for the millions of domain registrants that this could effect in a negative way? These changes would give way too much power to the registry.
