I am a .org registrant (non-profit). I've read about a lot of bad decisions under the UDRP. The URS seems even worse. I heard the URS is very new and is being reviewed now to see if it is working properly. It is too soon to include an untested policy on .org domains where for a few hundred dollars anyone could try to shut down someone else's website. Telling the .org registry that it can charge any price it wants for renewing a domain name is a terrible idea. Why would you allow them to set a crazy high price? They could try to force the domain owners to pay a very high price each year to renew their domain name, and if the domain owner either won't or can't, then the .org registry could take away their domain name, set a high registration price on it, and then try to find someone else who is willing to pay a high price for it. This is very unfair to long time .org domain owners who may see their prices raised sky high for no reason. You let the new domain extensions charge any price they want, but that hasn't gone so well. Lots of people got burned when the new registries offered low rates for the first year, and then after people registered the domain names and some built web sites on them, some of the prices were raised through the roof. .Org has been working just fine for decades where the prices maybe go up a little bit each year. Allowing huge price increases from one year to the next could ruin .org for everybody. I think you should pay a little more attention to what is good for the owners of .org domain names. The registries are doing fine. They don't need your help as they are already making plenty of money. -- -- Alex

I am a .org registrant. A number of excellent objections to raising the cap on .org legacy TLDs have been explained here. I find it difficult to believe that an organization like ICANN that is supposed to serve the public potentially could destroy tens of thousands of small organizations' most important means of outreach to the public. I registered three small websites for loose networks that advocate for specific issues. While the .net is the main site, I forward the .org to each one. I also keep the domain because I, or others who I work with, may in the future want to turn one or more of the websites into a full blown organizations. Also, I know that there are factions very opposed to the mission of the sites and would be delighted to buy the .org sites and use them to mock the current .net sites or even to defraud visitors. I'm sure lots of organizations have that issue. Similar concerns apply to individuals who do not want their name sullied with false sites mocking or misrepresenting them. Yes, speculators and domain investors can be annoying. But at least if you want a domain back they'll sell it to you. Saboteurs will just hold on to it! I thought when the United States let ICANN go it was to serve the larger public and world in a fairer way and help keep costs under control for countries with smaller GDP and personal and group incomes. But now I see just the opposite. I am very disappointed. A number of non-profit organizations make use of the .org domains. Regulations to keep the cost increases down helps organizations that are already limited in the funds they have to make use of technology. The proposed changes would hurt non-profits by making them vulnerable to sharp increases in their domain renewals. Hello— I am writing you to urge you to please not implement the proposed removal of price caps on domains, in particular .org domains. I signed up many years ago for a .org domain because at the time there were not many alternatives to .com domains. I use my website for many purposes, but most personal and non-profit ones (e.g. to show my illustrations and essays). I don’t make any money off of it, and if the price goes up for my ISP it will go up for me, making it prohibitively expensive for me to maintain my website. .org has traditionally been the home for a lot of non-business or non-profit websites. Hello, As a marine biologist working on many voluntary projects, particularly on marine mammal issues, it will be difficult for us if you remove the price cap. We won’t be able to afford the domain in a longer term, and we won’t be able to sustain our environmental movements for long. I am and have been a .org registrant since 1999. Legacy gTLDs like .org are fundamentally different from ever burgeoning list of for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs should be considered a public trust, unlike the new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability and should not be subject to possible uncapped price increases while receiving no benefit whatsoever in return. Any renewal of the .org registry agreement must have a clause restricting fee increases to the current maximum of 10% and preferably to a smaller percentage given the current world economic circumstances. ICANN appears to be currying favour with registries by removing price controls at the expense of the public interest and registrants.

Hi I'm writing to ask ICANN to reconsider removing the registration fee caps on .org domains as these domains are used by non-profit trade associations and individual member associations as well as tax-exempt charities. The current arrangements have worked well so please don't allow non-profit organizations to be subjected to potential fee increases of an indeterminate amount. ICANN is becoming a corrupt organization, which satisfies the egos of its directors, employees, and registrants. ICANN's main objective in removing the old gTLD price cap is to make a profit. ICANN has employees who earn high salaries and work poorly, but increasingly need to earn millions. I believe that UN and Interpol should oversee the suspicious behavior of the ICANN board. Hello, Section on « Pricing for Domain Name Registrations and Registry Services » proposes to remove the price cap provisions in the .org agreeement. This is a mistake. Entities that own a .org site include non-for-profit organisations that should not be exposed to arbitrary price rises. Regards, Jean-Armand Moroni
