Dear ladies and gentlemen, I sincerely ask you to reconsider your proposal to remove the price cap on .org domains. By doing that and treating the non-profit .org TLD as equivalent to for-profit gTLDs, you're paving the way for disproportional profits on the back of many open-source and other non-profit organizations, which are powering the internet as we know it. I'm contributing to and managing the finances of one such open-source project with an .org domain. We're entirely funded from donations. It would be a shame and feel like a betrayal to our donors if I had to allocate more of that money to our domain instead of using it to fund the development of software and documentation available to all of us. I represent a small not-for-profit membership organisation in the UK - The EM Gauge Society. The Society is operated entirely by volunteers as we don't have the funds to employ staff, even on a part-time basis. I am one of those volunteers, looking after the Society email and website. We believe it is reasonable that the cost of domain renewal should increase over time, roughly in line with inflation trends, but as the registrant of a .org domain, we would like to voice our opposition to unrestrained price rises after the Registry Agreement is renewed. I operate a number of .org websites for non-profit projects and in this case non-profit really means zero profit. I pay some of the domains out of my own pocket to keep the websites for open source projects afloat. If the price goes up significantly, I will be forced to shut a number of websites down. I am a .org registrant. ICANN staff should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN policy making is supposed to be a ‘bottom up, multi-stakeholder model’. I believe that legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs are essentially a public trust, unlike new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. Unrestrained price increases on the millions of .org registrants who are not-for-profits or non-profits would be unfair to them. Unchecked price increases have the potential to result in hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred from these organizations to one non-profit, the Internet Society, with .org registrants receiving no benefit in return. ICANN should not allow one non-profit nearly unlimited access to the funds of other non-profits. ICANN appears to be entirely catering to registries by removing price caps. ICANN should stand up for the public interest and registrants! The following entry is from ICANN's website- "ICANN is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable." ICANN is supposed to operate for the public benefit. I don't believe this policy would fall under "public benefit". It would certainly not be beneficial to domain registrants. There are no protections for them. Advancements in technology should be driving the cost of operating a registry down, yet domain prices keep going up. There is no "public benefit" justification to these changes. It is just a handout to business at the expense of registrants’ rights and protections. Pierre Henny

I am a .org registrant, and I love the domain extension. The domain name is great for non-profits or nonprofit projects. Removing any pricing caps, will diminish any value this domain extension has. It already has to compete against .com, and is only being still used because it is not that much more expensive, while still having its reputation. Removing the price cap will kill the domain extension, nobody will use it, register it or renew it. Don't make such a mistake. Sincerely, Mārtiņš Būmanis
