The .org gTLD is used largely by nonprofits. The price cap provisions of the .org agreement are vital for these service organizations. It is unclear why, in the pointless quest to "align" the .org agreement with the base level agreement, ICANN is prepared to throw nonprofits under the bus. Do not do this! - Surajit

Dear Sir I have had hemp.org before ICANN was. When I first obtained the domain there was no cost. Each year the price goes up making the internet less affordable. I am a disabled American veteran on limited income and can not afford price increase. To me, this is just an other example of the internet becoming more corporate and less people oriented. To whom it may concern, I am somewhat concerned about the unlimited/unregulated price increase rule change proposed for the .org domains which can be acted upon by registrar members which is outlined in the following section: Pricing for Domain Name Registrations and Registry Services (Section 2.10 of the .org renewal agreement): In alignment with the base registry agreement, the price cap provisions in the current .org agreement, which limited the price of registrations and allowable price increases for registrations, are removed from the .org renewal agreement. The .org domain is primarily targeted towards organisations who are for the larger part non profit in nature and whilst the cost of domain registration is potentially a small component of overall operational expense cost a change that allows uncontrolled mark up of renewal and/or registration costs that could lead to an increased barrier to maintain web presence, increase domain snipering and squatting. I would recommend that such alterations outlined in section 2.10 of the .org renewal agreement be reviewed and left as they currently reside. There is potential for prices rapidly grow with this proposed change to the .org renewal agreement enacted. Kind Regards, Jim Woodward.

I strongly oppose the unconscionable proposal allowing unbounded price increases for .org domain registration, via Section 2.10 of the .org renewal agreement. ICANN grants a monopoly concession for management of the .org TLD. Organizations are deeply invested in their domains; they can not move their web sites and email systems to a new domain without disruptive loss of access to their collaborators and stakeholders. Verisign has not established a track record as a responsible corporate citizen focused on the public good over profits. This creates an opportunity for Verisign to hold myriad organizations hostage, charging unlimited fees to retain access to domains that they have actively used for decades. I anticipate that Verisign will engage in vicious price discovery, charging extortionate fees--and earning windfall profits completely disconnected from the tapering cost of doing business--depriving small organizations of their domains while sucking massive flows of donations away from program goals toward crony capitalist enrichment. Will WWF pay $1 million/month for their .org renewal while 10,000 small NGOs lose their websites to domain squatting crony-pals aligned with Verisign? I reiterate that domain name registration is a monopoly concession. Monopolies are always subject to regulation, for good reason. Should we allow the gas company increase prices by a factor of 1000 during a bitter cold snap? Should we allow the water company to charge $10/gallon for piped drinking water? No, absolutely not. This is a shameful and corrupt proposal. I censure this testament of indifference to the needs of end users in favor of selfish proposals seeded by rent-seeking crony capitalists. To quote: This change will not only allow the .org renewal agreement to better conform with the base registry agreement, but also takes into consideration the maturation of the domain name market and the goal of treating the Registry Operator equitably with registry operators of new gTLDs and other legacy gTLDs utilizing the base registry agreement I don[t believe there should be ANY requirement that the .org agreement “conform” to the base registry agreement. Would that be the case, why not simply remove ALL specific agreements? There is a reason to deviate for different gTLDs. Each country code has their own restrictions they put on the use of certain gTLDs. Should we remove that? Should we treat .xxx the same as .edu? Please, no. What this is, in effect, is a catering to the greed of domain registry operators. The internet was designed for the public good. Granted, industry did a lot to further the use of the internet, and I have no problem with allowing .com to charge an insane amount of money for a domain (though I appreciate that I don’t pay through the nose for my domains). But .org is . . . different. .org is an organizational construct. Should we allow domain registry operators to charge the same for institutional operators as the chess club? Do we want to see a proliferation of supposedly “fair" pricing plans that really just mean that companies running registries can maximize their profit at the expense of . . . well, everyone? I mean, the Googles and Apples of the world can still snap up any and all domain names they want, and it won’t even cost them the INTEREST on their cash holdings. But the difference between $10/year and, say, $100/year, well, that is the difference between having a presence on the internet, and just using Twitter to tell people things. Perhaps ICANN really does want the internet to be the domain of 5-6 special companies, who, of course, only have our best interests at heart. Don’t be the greedy people you are tempted to become. I think fee caps for ALL domains make sense. I’m not suggesting there shouldn’t be some way for registrars to recoup the cost of what they’re doing. But most of the registrars simply resell their “service” to other companies that tack on those moneymaking add-ons that people who aren’t familiar with internet services both want and need. But for the chess clubs, the book clubs, the collectors clubs, and all the other “organizations” out there. . . let’s not make it possible for greedy corporations to bilk people. Running a registry should be a non-profit operations, in my opinion. But since I can’t have that, can I at least have the regulation that keeps things useful, affordable, and reasonable? Thank you. To whom it may concern, I can tell you that lifting the ceiling on the yearly price for a .org domain is a terrible idea. I work for an amateur radio club that is a not for profit organization. The membership is falling and skewed to older members. The money intake for dues isn’t that much and increasing the .org fee would be a hardship. I am sure that this is a not brilliant idea. David L.
