Hello ICANN, I am a digital media specialist working for a nonprofit funder in the Bay Area. I am extremely concerned that lifting the price caps on .org domains will allow unscrupulous squatters to gouge nonprofits as they seek to acquire critical brand assets, and thereby prevent them from doing critical work to better our community. Please abandon this proposed policy change and keep the existing price caps in place. My family have used the Motz.org domain for many years. This is the email address we all give out. There is no way we could afford the proposed new price. Can You Forward this to Mr. Russ Weinstein, Global Domains Division I can't find a email and the one on the .org comment section is to globalsupport(a)icann.org <globalsupport(a)icann.org> org pricing unlimited bad plan it hurts the little guy and nonprofits. I am a single .org website user and have a limited budget. Most .org are nonprofits. Versign and godaddy make enough off .coms and such need for the every individual to have a internet voice. net neutrality is bad for the individual. Domains https://godsclimatechangeplan.org<https://godsclimatechangeplan.org/> https://moeddoodle.org<https://moeddoodle.org/> I would be priced out of the market with no voice I will be putting a no charge for .org and .info in God's iClimate iChange iPlan that is what it should be. Hi, As this information based era still evolving, the need for non-profits to have presence on the internet is high, lots of people like myself benefit from the usage they use for their domains, by allowing to reach more people and meet their purpose to make the world a better place with opportunities for all living beings. I am a .org registrant. ICANN staff should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN policy making is supposed to be a ‘bottom up, multi-stakeholder model’. I believe that legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs are essentially a public trust, unlike new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. Unrestrained price increases on the millions of .org registrants who are not-for-profits or non-profits would be unfair to them. Unchecked price increases have the potential to result in hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred from these organizations to one non-profit, the Internet Society, with .org registrants receiving no benefit in return. ICANN should not allow one non-profit nearly unlimited access to the funds of other non-profits. ICANN appears to be entirely catering to registries by removing price caps. ICANN should stand up for the public interest and registrants!

This applies to most well known TLDs: .org, .biz, .info, .com, . This is basically sanctioning extortion, a domain name is closer to a trademark, except a company is apparently not allowed to own it... instead they must keep "leasing" their trademark from a registrar. What do I get for improving my domain name (making my business known, improving public trust, running a well known blog/ news site)? Clearly higher rent costs on that same name. The Registry Operator is not going to be passing along actual business costs, or selling "domain-names with more value-added-benefits"... they know their audience has no choice but to pay. Effectively this is like the insulin price hike: morally wrong. Yet with ICANN backing off, you expect the Registry Operator to police themselves. OR their audiences to do so (by switching registrars? most will likely follow suit as they're businesses)

We object to ICANN lifting price caps on .org domains, as mostly .org domain are used by non-corporates, which are, in many cases, Charities, or the not for profits sector. Major software suppliers support these with concesssions for not-for-profit software and services. ICANN should not contemplate any moral or logical rationale to behave differently. Similar arguments apply to many non-corporates across a range of different domains. Please do not allow open domain pricing unless you are absolutely certain that competition amongst domain wholesalers and retailers will drive prices downwards. Otherwise there is every likelihood of upward price drift. That would inevitably hurt the small business and not-for-profits sector harder than major and international business sector.
