I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed change to the .org registry change related to price caps. 10% per year is more than fair, and I see no valid reason why domain name pricing should go up substantially over time, especially in the non-profit sphere which .org is supposed to represent. Dear ICANN, It has come to our attention that you are proposing to remove the price cap on .org, .biz and .info domains. As the owner of several .org domain names, I believe this is a bad idea, for a number of reasons. - By removing the cap, you are essentially opening the door to arbitrary price increases. This affects our ability to plan and invest in domain names as the way for our customers and our community to find us, since we have zero reliability on being able to afford them the next year. - In principle, in a free market with abundance of parties, we should see an improvement in technology that would drive the prices down. However, when there are only a limited number of players that actually set those prices (as most "domain registrars" are actually just resellers and do not decide on the prices), this only stagnates the prices. It happens in broadband services, it has been happening in domain names. The prices have been steady for years, and not gone down. - Domain names are a tool that help customers reach us. However, almost since domain names began to be registered, they have become a product on their own. We have domains that are extremely relevant to our business, being locked by a third party that is not using them. If the price cap is removed, domain names will become more of an object of trade, which will block them for longer. Please, reconsider your position, and keep the price cap. I am strongly opposed to removing PIR's 10% annual price increase cap on .org domains. This could have catastrophic consequences for nonprofits. Free market mechanisms can't operate when you have a single seller and extremely high inelasticity of demand, which is the case in the ICANN - PIR relationship. Removing the price caps would be a huge mistake for the 10 million nonprofits who depend upon having this domain. While I am not completely familiar with all that goes on in this realm, I have been made aware of this new policy that would allow an uncapped price on the .org TLD. As a web developer who has dealt first hand with and built websites on a couple .org domains, the negative impact that this change would have on the freedom and ability for organizations such as churches and other similar entities who operate off of donations, would definitely prove to be detrimental. Please do not allow the opening up of the .org TLD to an unrestricted monopolization that would thereby give unreasonable opportunity for overpricing this TLD. Thank you for kindly considering your part in maintaining the freedoms that our forefathers and many soldiers have fought so hard to maintain. I know this may seem like such a small issue in the arena of true American freedom, but many small issues make big issues and together lend themselves to precedents that affect areas of great proportion. I privately support several .org non-profit sites. If the cost goes up substantially as presented, I will not be able to support these non-profit organizations. Be reasonable and not greedy. Thank you. Chet

Please don’t pass this absurd policy to allow unlimited markups for internet domain sales. As many charity organizations use the .org domain ending, your change in the rules could result in affecting the help received by people needing it most.

.ORG domains must remain accessible to non-profits and community organizations. PIR should not be able to increase the wholesale prices of .org domains by greater than 10% a year.
