I am a .org registrant. Removing price caps is not fair to .org domain owners. Many of them have websites that they have used for years. If price caps are removed, the cost to renew their domain names may become too expensive, and they could be forced to give up websites that are important to them. Best Regards, Mushfiqur Rahman

I am a .org registrant. ICANN staff should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN policy making is supposed to be a ‘bottom up, multi-stakeholder model’. I believe that legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs are essentially a public trust, unlike new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. Unrestrained price increases on the millions of .org registrants who are not-for-profits or non-profits would be unfair to them. Unchecked price increases have the potential to result in hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred from these organizations to one non-profit, the Internet Society, with .org registrants receiving no benefit in return. ICANN should not allow one non-profit nearly unlimited access to the funds of other non-profits. ICANN appears to be entirely catering to registries by removing price caps. The whole notion of the .org extension is based on not-for-profit organizations being able to differentiate themselves. To imposes higher prices on such organizations is a contradiction in terms. Instead, perhaps you should require organizations to prove their non-profit status either to retain their .org classification or lose it. Or you could charge those who are using it for a profit motive to pay a heavy premium, while making it free to charities and such. Do the socially responsible thing! Sheldon Azimov 514-515-0030

.org domain names are traditionally associated with non-profit and free services. The price cap is critical to help such organizations to stay above water. By removing it abruptly, there is a chance that the prices will hike so much, even temporarily, and will force some of the smaller non-profit and free services to stop serving. As a .org registrant, I respectfully make the following comments. The .org registry was created with public money as part of the Internet commons. This is different from new top-level domains such as .guru and .money, where the operators invested their own money to become registrars. As such, it makes sense to allow them to charge whatever the market will bear. That is not the case with the .org registry. Allowing the .org registry to charge any price it wants for renewing a domain name is a bad idea. A domain owner could be forced to pay a very high price each year to renew their domain name, and if the domain owner either won't or can't, then the .org registry could take away their domain name, set a high registration price on it, and then try to find someone else who is willing to pay a high price for it. This is very unfair to long time .org domain owners who may see their prices raised significantly only to benefit the registry. I thank you for considering my comments. John S Davis Greensboro, NC

Most of my domains are .com, but I run a couple of .org sites for non-profits. Removing the price cap would be as damaging as it would be unnecessary & foolish. Any firm that cannot control their costs & realize a profit under an agreement that allows escalation up to 10% per year (a historically huge number) cannot be trusted to manage this critical resource. “.org” is an important badge & tool which helps the public identify organizations working for the public good. Allowing unlimited price hikes & unlimited profits would be antithetical to the concept of the .org TLD, as well as making it unaffordable for those who use it. This proposal is both illogical & unjustifiable. Reject it, or simply solicit bids for a new contract…with price cap in place. Thank you. —Larry Simms

It is absolutely outrageous that ICANN is considering removing a price cap already set well above inflation for a service with next-to-no innovation that must cost less and less to run thanks to improving automation technology. There is surely no reason that PIR, apparently earning $90 million a year from registrations on what is intended to be a gTLD for not-for-profits, could possibly justify needing a more than 10% price increase. If the move is to milk more money from large companies then surely this is negated by the loss in smaller sales. If the aim is to reduce domain squatting then there are alternative approaches. If the move is to ruin the small and personal users of this popular gTLD then, well, mission accomplished. Either way it sounds like simply like a greedy money grab. I strongly oppose ICANN’s proposition to remove price caps on domains. If anything I believe the contract should be revoked and control handed over to a not-for-profit company set-up to manage the .org and bill enough to cover their costs. This move will set a very bad precedent for the domain market as a whole.
