It is our understanding that ICANN’s current contract with Public
Interest Registry (PIR) allows for an increase in yearly
registration price by 10%. Although this is substantial from the
perspective of many non-profit organisations, it is manageable.
Alarmingly, ICANN is proposing to extend the contract to operate
.org, but letting PIR set whatever prices it wants. This could lead
to substantial increases in recurring and unavoidable annual
costs which could be devastating to non-profit groups whose income
is nominal and are already struggling to remain financially viable.
On behalf of Unexpected Wildlife Refuge, I urge that ICANN continue
to insist on a yearly cap on registration costs, ideally something
considerably less than the current 10%.
