Automation technology is supposed to make basic services like operation of a domain registry cheaper over time. I see this proposal to increase fees at a faster rate as pure greed: someone wants to stuff their own pockets, plain and simple. If the domain registries can't figure out how to operate on around $10 per domain per year or less, the management ought to be given over to some sort of non-profit cooperative, or to a fully automated blockchain-based smart contract system.
