ideally, the classification chosen or developed, should be consistent across the different sources and/or layers of information. I know some are allergic to the idea of numbers ("like in ITU" as one Councilor recently said just before jumping into a plane to Busan), but ICANN is too well known in the outside world for its long acronyms as well. And, for example, just last week GAC decided to change the Cross Community Acronym by putting and additional C in the front of CWG. So we need some clarity and consistency if we want to open up to a wider pool of voluntary parties.

In addition to this, I also wanted to flag that we are working on an overview of all the existing sources of information available regarding GNSO projects (the project list, the action item list, the PDP one-pagers, etc.) so that these are available from a central page on the GNSO web-site with clear indications on what the purpose of each source of information is and what details can be expected to be found so that it will hopefully become easier for those looking for additional information to choose the right source depending on their level of knowledge and objective. Hopefully such an overview will also assist in further discussions on how existing tools can be improved as well as identifying what still may be missing.

As the number of projects & acronyms grow, and the outputs expected vary, I wonder if there is no way to develop a clearer and easier to follow classification for the GNSO, that takes into account at least two main characteristics of the projects in the hope it would help insiders as well as outsiders to get a better overview:

 

a. the different documents (to be) expected from the project

 

  • Frameworks (of principles)
  • Issue reports
  • Working group (draft or final) reports
  • Policies (draft or final)
  • other Documents (?)

 

b. the different types of working groups

 

  • Discussion Groups
  • Cross community working groups
  • Community-wide working groups
  • (Review and Standing) Committees
  • GNSO - xxx Consultation Groups
