It is with great sadness that we report the death of our colleague Jon Bing, who passed away on January 14 following prolonged periods of illness.
At the time of his death, preparation of a festschrift was nearing completion, edited by two of Jon's Oslo colleagues (Dag Wise Schartum and Lee Bygrave). The volume was to have marked the occasion of Jon's 70th birthday, in the spring of this year. The editors have decided to continue with the planned volume. The book will give a clear account of Jon's pioneering contribution to the field of Information Technology and Law -- of which his papers on AI and Law were just one part -- in addition to showing the breadth of his work as a writer of fiction, and as a leading figure in the cultural and intellectual life of Norway. It will also contain personal reminiscences from a number of people who were privileged to have worked with Jon, and to have benefited from his openness to the interdisciplinary, and from his great generosity of spirit.
In the meantime, we are pleased to provide links to two short papers by Jon Bing, which provide a glimpse of his extraordinary interests and talents. One, entitled "The Riddle of the Robots <http://www.jiclt.com/index.php/jiclt/article/download/57/56> ," draws upon his experience as a science fiction writer. The other, entitled "Computers and Law: Some Beginnings <http://what.csc.villanova.edu/~cassel/2500/S2008/Law4.pdf> ," draws upon his experience as one of the pioneers in this field.
