Fwd: Tweets from "GNSO"
Dear Council Members, One of our constituency members noted that the “GNSO” is tweeting about Internet governance matters generally, on initiatives that are outside the current activity list of the GNSO. The registries think this is inappropriate and that the GNSO twitter feed should not be used for general ICANN issues. Dear Brett, The GNSO twitter feed was established in close co-ordination with the Council leadership and is managed by ICANN policy staff as a mechanism to inform and reach out to the GNSO and broader community in relation to topics / issues that are deemed of interest to the GNSO. As you may have noticed, we do take great care that the tweets are always factual, referring either to recent decisions, reports, posts from the GNSO or ICANN. As Internet Governance has featured highly on the agenda for the broader community as well as the GNSO, tweets related to that topic have also been included (but again, always referring to official posts / information and not expressing any particular opinion). However, if that is considered to be problematic, we are happy to refrain from including Internet Governance related tweets from now on if that's what the Council would prefer. Dear Council Members,
One of our constituency members noted that the “GNSO” is tweeting about Internet governance matters generally, on initiatives that are outside the current activity list of the GNSO. The registries think this is inappropriate and that the GNSO twitter feed should not be used for general ICANN issues. What can we do to rein in the twitter posts being sent on our behalf?

With regard to the perceptions, the idea was (is) to communicate the work and outcomes (of the work) of the GNSO such that anyone with an interest in the GNSO (and its Council) could know about our work and any related outcomes. Sorry for the delay in responding -- off on a bit of holiday after the end of the school year ... Avri, it seems to me that it is important to have a forum/account where the GNSO speaks ex cathedra (i.e., where official positions (resolutions) and official informational links are communicated). This seems like the role of the chair (Jonathan, with support from the staff). If I understand you, that was what you were wanting to protect. I completely agree with that. What I was attempting to say was that I think we would also benefit from a single location where all the council members could express (a) professional opinions and (b) positions of the groups they represent. I say this because it isn't always easy for us, and certainly not for others, to track down all the various venues in which we individually communicate (Twitter, Linkedin, other social media, blogs ...). I would certainly benefit from that, and I suspect others would too. We can clearly do that via this email stream, but we do not have (to my knowledge) any other shared forum to share perspectives with the public/community. One of the virtues of Twitter is its brevity, and maybe a shared account for us would be of benefit. My final, general observation is that more sharing is good -- especially in this crucial transition period Just a few thoughts ... Speaking of sharing by all possible means, etc - I noticed the other day that the GNSO does not have a wikipedia page, though peer groups like the CCNSO and ALAC do.
