moving forward -- MSM
Hello all. Further to some of the discussion on today's call regarding prioritization of the 8 issues identified in the recent call for comments on the evolving multistakeholder system. It it was noted that some issues are much more fundamental/weightier the others -- e.g. issue #4 -- roles and responsibilities and a wholistic view of ICANN as opposed to issue #1 -- prioritization of work. It was further noted that the fundamental issues will not be solved in the near term but some of the other could certainly be at least alleviated with some practical changes. So I would like to suggest that, rather than prioritize these issues, we put them in two categories -- issues we think can be solved by making some practical changes in how we work and issues that will require fundamental changes -- so, short term goals and long term goals. I think this would still fit into the way this project is proceeding without us having to say that fundamental change is less important than prioritization of work. Marita

At the risk of sounding like a first year MBA, we might want to consider a 4 quadrant diagram. Of course, the most infamous is the Eisenhower matrix of Urgency and Importance [Image result for urgent vs important] The whole idea of this is that we get so caught up in the “Urgent,” including the urgent but unimportant, that we ignore strategic issues. Stephanie Perrin would argue that is what happened with GDPR. So it’s worth our making sure that we don’t fail to mention those things which are important to use but will take some time. On the other hand, as Alan mentioned, there are things which might happen quickly such as the new PDP 3.0 that could have an adverse impact on us so we should put significant focus on them. I can see two different possible matrices: Impact vs Time Horizon to suggest what is important tactically vs strategically and Importance and Effort which could, at least for us, represent some sort of ROI (return on investment). Just a thought. So I would like to suggest that, rather than prioritize these issues, we put them in two categories -- issues we think can be solved by making some practical changes in how we work and issues that will require fundamental changes -- so, short term goals and long term goals. I think this would still fit into the way this project is proceeding without us having to say that fundamental change is less important than prioritization of work.
