Seems that the domain name dropped last December before being reregistered. The reason that it may have seen a lot of queries is because some of the whois lookup programs may not have had their configuration files updated. Any Linux installation using an old configuration file would have been trying to query the server on the old domain name. Apart from operational reasons and even with the redactions, WHOIS data still gets scraped.
