+1 to the language options. However i think the charter should reflect this[1] and the languages to be supported be determine early enough. It may also be good to agree on what level of language translation is required (for the meetings alone or all other content?) as this will also determine the cost implications.

Cheers!
1. Current charter does make mention of any language requirement

+1 Carolina

I am already one of the members of this CWG who asked for interpretation services.
I am Spanish speaker.
I think if I want to invite people from my region to participate and involve in this complicated process, we have to offer interpretation services in the calls and in the F2F meetings.
So answering Chuck's question, we can begin offering Spanish interpretation.

Fatima

Although I personally don't need interpretation services for the CWG meeting, I would appreciate if ICANN could provide translation of the documents that will be placed in the repository into Spanish. I hold webinars and list serve exchanges with ccTLDs in LAC and documentation in Spanish is a good way to facilitate outreach.
Personally, I believe that all the documents that will be in this repository should be translated into the UN languages as a gesture of inclusion.

The problem is that this WG is required to be open and transparent. People may be coming in to it over the next month or so. How can they know whether they want to participate if there is a language barrier at this stage? How can they ask for translation services if they are not participating yet? Chicken and egg?

I think it would be helpful if those who need translation services would
identify which U.N. language is needed. That way we can pursue this
possibility in the most cost efficient manner and maybe increase
chances of succeeding.

Participation and Outreach

Hi All,
Following up on the discussion on translation services that occurred on
the CWG call on 6th October.

I think its valuable to initiate a discussion on wether the group feels
that not having a translation service available is a barrier to
participation and outreach and if so what can be done to alleviate any
concerns in this area.

Personally I feel that this is a process that encompasses an
internationally diverse group and that participation should not be
functionally limited to those who have a working command of any
single language. However I do understand the logistics of providing
such a service come at a cost.

So is there a value in requesting translation (live or for the recorded
calls) services to be provided to the group?

Please feel free to comment.
