Dear Dusan, and All,

We are writing to seek for Cyrillic GP’s feedback regarding the Greek-Cyrillic cross-script variants.

The Greek GP has shared the first version of Greek LGR proposal with the IP and the IP has shared the following comment regarding Greek-Cyrillic cross-script variants.

Please review the IP communication below and kindly share you feedback on the two questions back with us.

If further information is required, kindly let us know.

Regards,

Pitinan

We have become aware of a Draft of the Greek LGR proposal in which a number of cross-script variants are defined between Greek and Cyrillic. We are in the process of evaluating these and drafting our response.

Some of the proposed cross-script variants would, if accepted, impose in-script variants for the Cyrillic script. We would like to appraise the Cyrillic GP of these and would like to get the GP's reaction to these proposals.

In principle, each LGR defines its own set of variants, appropriate to its user community, and integration results in the common superset. However, when this process would result in imposing in-script variants between two characters that are both in another script, the bar for accepting such variants for integration has to be necessarily rather higher. Especially so in the case of the Cyrillic Script LGR which has been completed and received "deferred" status.

Please review the following table and in particular the cases where a single Greek character is proposed to map to more than one Cyrillic variant.

Greek Letter

Cyrillic Letter

U+03B3                       γ

Greek small letter GAMMA

ү                      U+04AF
Cyrillic small letter STRAIGHT U

ұ                      U+04B1

Cyrillic small letter STRAIGHT U WITH STROKE

U+03B8                       θ

Greek small letter THETA

ө                      U+04E9

Cyrillic small letter BARRED O

U+03BA                       κ

Greek small letter KAPPA

к                      U+043A

Cyrillic small letter KA

қ                      U+049B

Cyrillic small letter KA WITH DESCENDER

U+03BD                       ν

Greek small letter NU

ұ                      U+04B1

Cyrillic small letter STRAIGHT U WITH STROKE

U+03BF                       ο

Greek small letter OMICRON

о                      U+043E

Cyrillic small letter O

U+03C4                       τ

Greek small letter TAU

т                       U+0442

Cyrillic small letter TE

ҭ                       U+04AD

Cyrillic small letter TE WITH DESCENDER

U+03C6                       φ

Greek small letter PHI

ф                      U+0444

Cyrillic small letter EF

U+03AF                       ί

Greek small letter IOTA WITH TONOS

і                       U+0456

Cyrillic small letter BYELORUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN I

U+03CA                       ϊ

Greek small letter IOTA WITH DIALYTIKA

ї                       U+0457

Cyrillic small letter YI

(Note: the proposed set of variants in the table above implies a variant between Greek NU and GAMMA, something that seems unintentional and which the IP will need to confirm with the Greek GP. Also, the two forms of IOTA have been proposed as in-script variants for Greek, which would imply a variant status between U=0456 and U+0457 even though that is not indicated in the table.)

We are looking for answers to these two questions:

(1) Which additional Cyrillic/Greek variants (not listed above) are already defined in the Cyrillic LGR?

(2) Which of the proposed in-script variants for Cyrillic would be considered problematic for the Cyrillic GP?

Your prompt response would be appreciated,

-IP
