Draft of EURALO brochure for outreach – to be discussed today
Dear all, I take the opportunity to remind you about our monthly call today/this afternoon at 17:00 CEST (Geneva-Berlin time). Together with Heidi we drafted a brochure/flyer for EURALO to be used at any further outreach activities. As this issue is part of our today’s Agenda, please have a look on it and let us know your remarks and comments at the call. Wolf, I promised to try and draft an couple of introductory paragraphs, how's this: Whether it's to send email, connect with friends on facebook or search with Google, for everything we do on the Internet we need type in an address on our computer or phone. EURALO helps decide how Internet addresses work, how the addressing system develops and is made secure, and is involved in discussions about intellectual property and consumer interests and a whole range of other issues. EURALO is how individuals from Europe can contribute to the global process of coordinating the naming system that's at the heart of the Internet. EURALO is one of the policy supporting structures of a global organization called ICANN -- the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN is one of the key organizations keeping the Internet running and evolving. EURALO brings the voices and contributions of Europeans from all walks of life to ICANN. Any organization representing individuals can join, and our email discussions lists are open to everyone. Adam, would you pre-pend these paragraphs to the paragraphs that Wolf wrote, or do you suggest them *instead* of Wolf's paragraphs? I like what you've written, but some of Wolf's prose is also good. In particular, you focus on "addressing" whilst Wolf focuses on "digital divides, net neutrality and civil rights in the information age". Strictly speaking, I agree that ICANN itself focuses solely on the Internet's identifiers, but I also would agree that At-Large has a wider mandate. Has this been defined, or can we take the mandate that was suggested in the At-Large review? Perhaps I'll work on a mixed version shortly... Olivier, my intention was to provide a couple of introductory paragraphs. What I've proposed does make some of the original text a bit redundant, but I hoped to try and capture the same spirit. Merging the two would be very helpful. I think we heard different views on the call, and I also think my view was in the minority, that's why I didn't touch the original text. Dear Adam and Olivier, first of all, THANKS Adam, for your text proposal what I (as usual!) appreciate a lot. I had the opportunity with Heidi to discuss this issue in Berne yesterday. Please allow me the following comment: I think, we had slightly different target groups in mind when we formulated the drafts because my approach was more "basic" than yours and your version (according to my understanding) is more appropriate for folks who are already basically familiar with ICANN. And I agree with Olivier that from an At-Large and RALO point of view we have to somehow include the complexity of a user and consumer perspective what (according to me) is our role at ICANN or our "wider mandate", as Olivier said. I agree and suggest, Adam, that "Merging the two would be very helpful" -- and I asked Heidi yesterday to assist us with a merged version of the drafts.
