Hi Everyone: I am sorry that you learned about me resigning my position as EPDP Chair by being copied on the resignation notice. It’s not good form but I thought it better to let my boss know first so that he doesn’t hear it from someone else. I am glad to have worked with you - getting to know some of you for the first time and some of you better than I did before this. I will continue to lead and aid the transition of leadership however it is required. I am also happy to chat informally about any topic. During the last several months, many of you provided signs of support - small and large, inadvertent and intentional. They were always appreciated and important to me, and never went unnoticed. I also appreciated the criticism that was offered, as it was always constructive. To the Support Team, you’ll hear more from me later. I’ll see you on the next call or in Kobe. Best regards, Kurt
Hi Kurt, this is sad news. I guess it is fair to say that this EPDP is amongst the most demanding projects ICANN has ever had. You and our excellent staff team have taken us further than most in the community thought we could ever get. Thanks for your dedication and tireless work, your professionalism and your kindness. Kudos and get some deserved rest now!! See you soon and all the best, Thomas

Dear Kurt I was very sorry to read your message. I really regret that you have decided to resign, and wish we could persuade you to reconsider. You have worked heroically to steer this group, and coordinate with our excellent staff team behind the scenes. We are all exhausted after the efforts of this process but know that you have put in massive amounts of work to prepare for the calls, the agendas, figuring out what the hell we were supposed to be doing, when many of us were just trying (and sometimes failing) to show up for the calls! It has been a privilege to work with you. You can feel immensely proud of the work you have done for the ICANN community. The final report is something we can all reflect on with pride. It is a matter of regret that not all of us felt able to support it in its final form - I believe it moves the state of knowledge forward about the interaction between privacy laws and the WHOIS. Look forward to seeing you again in Kobe. Warmest regards and heartfelt thanks for your work. Emily On Fri, Feb 22, 2019 at 9:18 AM Thomas Rickert <epdp@gdpr.ninja> wrote:

Kurt, There’ll be more to say face to face in Kobe but for now, kudos my friend. Very few people could do what you have done. In leading this EPDP you have added to your already extraordinary contribution to ICANN and its multi-stakeholder model and I’m humbled to have watched you do it and to have been a very small part of it. Cheers, CD

Dear Kurt- I have been reflecting a lot on your decision and I just want to say that your valued, unique personality is what I believe made you extremely successful in this role. You are a thoughtful, balanced and open-minded individual who led the group in a practical, calm, kind and professional manner. Dear Kurt, The Registries Stakeholder Group wants to express our deep appreciation for your tireless dedication to the EPDP process. As we all know this is historically one of the thorniest issues to face ICANN in many years and one which many the skeptic believed could not have been achieved. The Phase One Final Report is proof as to the ability of the multistakeholder model to tackle difficulties issues of tremendous importance, even where time is short, and find compromise amongst differing views and competing needs. This success is a testament to your work guiding the group. You engaged with the team and staff with unfailing good humor and fortitude and we believe that shows in our Phase One Final Report. Thank you so much for lending your skills and knowledge so willingly to this task, and we, without doubt, would have not come to our conclusions on Phase I without you. We certainly lament not having your presence as we continue into Phase Two. We truly believe that the excellent ground work that you have laid, will come to fruition in the successful completion of the mammoth tasks yet to come. Best wishes in your next steps. We’re consoled by the fact that you will continue to share your expertise with the ICANN community. Looking forward to seeing you in Kobe. Kurt, The Business Constituency would like to express our deepest appreciation for your support of the EPDP. As others have already noted, this was mostly uncharted territory for the ICANN community. You and Staff were inventing solutions and putting them into place in rapid succession, with the result that each month’s effort was more effective than what we had tried only weeks before. The lessons we learned here will benefit ICANN policy development for years to come. In spite of these challenges, you never ceased finding ways to bring us together, to bridge our differences, to help us find ways to move forward even when tempers were frayed and patience was stretched thin. That would be a great accomplishment under any circumstances; in the EPDP, it was absolutely essential. We will certainly miss you during Phase Two. Best wishes and we’re looking forward to seeing soon you in Kobe. Thanks, Mark, Margie and the Business Constituency PS: Others have mentioned your good humor, but I’d particularly like to call out your unique style of humor. I don’t think a week went by without me laughing out loud at some side remark or dry self-deprecation made by you. Thanks for keeping things light; for me, it made a big difference. /marksv -----Original Message----- From: Gnso-epdp-team <gnso-epdp-team-bounces@icann.org> On Behalf Of Kurt Pritz Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2019 16:23 To: GNSO EPDP <gnso-epdp-team@icann.org> Subject: [Gnso-epdp-team] Resignation Redux Hi Everyone: I am sorry that you learned about me resigning my position as EPDP Chair by being copied on the resignation notice. Dear Kurt, It is sad to know that you are resigning your position as chair of the EPDP for registration data. Given the time constraint and the diverse and conflicting interests of the members, reaching the status of delivering a final report is in itself a tremendous achievement. I confidently say that any success achieved by our group is indebted to your continues dedication, commitment, wise leadership and guidance. Thank you and all the best. Hi Kurt, I am really sorry to see you go, but understand fully, and support your decision to do what you believe is best for you at this point. You’ve already done so much for us all since the EPDP began, so you are duly owed our support right now, in addition to our gratitude and respect. I’m not at all surprised to see that despite this Team’s disagreement on a number of issues, our high regard of you is something we seem to all agree on. This isn’t the first GNSO PDP I’ve had the privilege of working with you on. Previously, when you were a member (as opposed to a Chair), your contributions always struck me as especially helpful and constructive. You always seemed to be objective, with a knack for cleverly analyzing the topic under discussion. As a Chair, I have to say your performance has far exceeded what I believed anybody at all could achieve. When we first started this thing, I didn’t think we would get as far as we did. What we have achieved has largely been due to your unwavering efforts, your attention to detail as well as your skill in helping endlessly bickering special interests achieve acceptable compromises on a policy topic in which little progress was ever made, but has been central to the GNSO over the better part of 2 decades. More than that, your interpersonal skills have made it a pleasure to work with you. It was comforting knowing that you were at the helm, and I realize now that this is something I might have personally taken for granted. I’ll always think of you as the Paul Bunyan of this EPDP, and whoever replaces you has seriously big shoes to fill!! I wish you the best of luck in all future endeavors, and look forward to working with you again. Thanks again…, for everything. Amr
