Dear Team members, ICANN Board made a decision yesterday and maybe we need bit time to consider options. We can/should spend some time during today's call to collect your views. Myself, regrettably, will not be on the call today. Rafik will step in. I am in Brazil attending an international conference on Lethal Autonomous weapon systems and the time of the call coincides with my presentation at the conference. But I will listen the conversation after the call. My initial thinking is is that we have few options to consider: - skip the remote meeting and write down 12 hours of work in losses - keep the schedule and follow it with minor adjustments (bulk of work will be on Saturday) - reschedule planned meetings over next few weeks with two/three meetings a week until we catch up with 12 hours loss at Cancun - skip Cancun remote work and request the GNSO Council permission for a special three day (including weekend) f2f meeting in LA some time in May to finalize report (EPDP budget allocation should allow for it) We can arrange a doodle pool to see what of the above and any other suggestion would gather the majority support Best regards JK On Thu, Feb 20, 2020 at 7:41 AM LEWIS-EVANS, Christopher < Christopher.Lewis-Evans@nca.gov.uk> wrote:

Julf, we all know that technology can be used either for the good or for the bad. I would certainly agree that autonomous weapons and weapons programmed to kill have extremely bad impact on human kind. I personally think we should stop developing and investing in such areas. On the other hand using automation and AI in areas like healthcare can dramatically improve diagnoses and reduce costs improving the lives of many people. When we suggest using automation in the SSAD, we suggest it to improve the quality of the service, productivity of the providers and compliance with the laws. That sounds so much more important and interesting than our work... In a world where things like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecClODh4zYk seem not too far off of what is possible, it becomes more important to regulate this than anything we will ever do at ICANN... Or: proceed with Cancun remote work and request the GNSO Council permission for a special three day (including weekend) f2f meeting in LA some time in May to finalize report (EPDP budget allocation should allow for it) I have a feeling we may need the additional time... Dear Team members, In addition to the options outlined in the previous mail, another came to my mind - maintaining EPDP Team meeting in Cancun and work thru Saturday and Sunday out from hotel. Some additional expenses, but least disruption of our plans. Just a thought Best regards JK On Thu, Feb 20, 2020 at 10:04 AM Janis Karklins <karklinsj@gmail.com> wrote:
