On Kathy’s note below.  I don’t believe it is accurate to state that the reason the community accepted brand TLDs was because exclusive generics were banned.   The concept of brands applying for TLDs (both open and closed) was discussed for many years prior to any discussion of closed generics.  There was nothing for the community to accept or reject about Brands in general closing TLDs.  The world knew that there would be these applications.  ICANN knew and touted there would be these applications (See https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-4-2008-06-26-en).
