Mary, Thanks for the reminder. I appreciate the nominations I have received, and am prepared to accept them, but would also like to suggest that the working group consider a slightly different approach. Let's be candid. If you review the list of participants in this working group, the vast majority of them fall into one of three sectors: intellectual property interests, non-commercial representatives, or registrars. Our challenge is to bring together these three camps, which have divergent (though to some extent overlapping) interests and goals, to make progress on the extensive and complex topics assigned to us. One way to address that challenge might be to assemble a leadership triumvirate consisting of representatives from all three of these groups. That seems to be where we are headed right now. But this approach could also add another administrative layer to our operations that is likely to prove unwieldy, inefficient, and a drain on the finite bandwidth we all bring to this task. An option worth considering would be to select a single chair who is independent of all three of these sectors. Fortunately, with Don Blumenthal, we have a working group member who not only fits that bill, but who also brings significant relevant experience to the role. Most recently, I had the opportunity to serve with Don on the Thick Whois PDP WG, where he took on an important leadership role for one of the most critical subgroups, and did an excellent job, in my opinion. With that context I would like to nominate Don as our chair and to ask fellow Working Group members to consider whether independent leadership, rather than a troika representing the three main tendencies, would be a better way to proceed. I look forward to hearing what others think about this. Yes Steve, there is a degree of self-interest and self-selection in the composition of this, and every other venue arising from an "open" call for contribution. The alternative is other-selection, exploited at many points in the corporation's history. With that observed, a given as the DoC and the Twomey/Dengate-Thrush CEO/Chair observed in the AoC in their recognition "that there is a group of participants that engage in ICANN's processes to a greater extent than Internet users generally", we must attempt to do our collective best. As we are being candid, I found your handling of an early call to be oddly directive, and am concerned that an overy directive chair may limit work in an area that, quite frankely, deserves thoughtful attention. I find the suggestion that self-interest is so consuming that a chair may not be found by the usual means overly pessimistic. I don't know if Don, or anyone, will rescue us from a hazard we may not, prove to be, captured by -- dysfunctional self-interests, and I'd prefer to follow the usual, mildly problematic process, and having suffered through some pretty badly lead pdp-wg(s), in my personal opinion, the present risk of failure is tolerable, and the process for remediation accessible. With that context I would like to nominate Don as our chair and to ask fellow Working Group members to consider whether independent leadership, rather than a troika representing the three main tendencies, would be a better way to proceed. Most recently, I had the opportunity to serve with Don on the Thick Whois PDP WG, where he took on an important leadership role for one of the most critical subgroups, and did an excellent job, in my opinion. With that context I would like to nominate Don as our chair and to ask fellow Working Group members to consider whether independent leadership, rather than a troika representing the three main tendencies, would be a better way to proceed. I look forward to hearing what others think about this.

Most recently, I had the opportunity to serve with Don on the Thick Whois PDP WG, where he took on an important leadership role for one of the most critical subgroups, and did an excellent job, in my opinion. With that context I would like to nominate Don as our chair and to ask fellow Working Group members to consider whether independent leadership, rather than a troika representing the three main tendencies, would be a better way to proceed. I look forward to hearing what others think about this.
