As a "Son of the Golden State" I can confirm Chuck's comment. The
Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant
Sequoia) in the Sierra Nevada mountains along the
California/Nevada border are huge compared to California's
Coastal Redwoods, but both are impressive. Interestingly, it
takes a forest floor fire to enable the redwood seeds to
germinate. It took a while to figure that out, so now a
sustainable redwood policy includes controlled forest floor
burns. Some of the trees are over 2000 years old.
