Sub Group Members:

Thank you for agreeing to participate in this important work as we near the final stages and conclusion of Phase 1 of this WG.

I will be on your call next week, and Kathy and Brian will be as well. We are happy to provide whatever assistance we can until your Sub Group selects a Chair to administer your proceedings.

A few personal thoughts that I hope will be helpful:

First, as we are reviewing WG recommendations that received broad support and garnered no to modest opposition, our working presumption should be that the recommendation will be considered as part of the final consensus call process – unless community feedback indicates substantial opposition or raises questions about its feasibility.
In addition to noting any substantial opposition, our review process should seek to identify constructive suggestions for modifying the recommendation so as to improve its operation and effectiveness.
Effective participation will require adequate preparation. There is no practical way that the Sub Group can review each and every comment on the several recommendations during each week’s meeting. Members will need to review comments in advance for the purpose of noting trends in the feedback, as well as particularly helpful suggestions, and be prepared to speak to them during each meeting. That is the only way we will meet our timeline.
Unless new facts have been brought to our attention via the community’s comments, we are not to relitigate previously discussed and settled issues. Nor is it our purpose to have Sub Group members restate their personal views on any matter. Rather, our purpose is to consider the community’s input and, based upon it, determine whether a recommendation should move on to consensus call, as well as whether it should be modified prior to that final step in our process.

I hope those thoughts are helpful – and welcome any feedback from you, as well as from my co-chairs and support staff.
