SSC Meeting – 07 December 2021

1. Welcome and Introductions

b. Standard Selection Process

• Usually the GNSO Council will run the call for volunteers and then the SSC reviews and evaluates the candidates and make recommendations to the Council.
• Representation from each SG/C.
• Usually there are around three selection processes a year.
• Decision is by full consensus; if full consensus is not reached a rationale will have to be provided to the GNSO Council.
• Process is to come to a preliminary agreement on a call and then follow up with non-objection on the list.
• Important to note: Processes are transparent – by default and unless otherwise directed by the GNSO Council, the names of all applicants and all documents received during the selection process shall be considered public and published on the GNSO web-site or other ICANN web-site as standard practice.  Deliberations can be private, but a rationale will have to be provided.
• Standard Selection Process in Brief:
  • Council typically designs and launches the Expressions of Interest process, assigning the selection to the SSC.
  • An SSC wiki page provides all relevant materials to support the SSC’s process, including list of candidates and EOI materials. Staff confirms affiliation stated by candidates, if applicable.
  • SSC meets to review the assignment, evaluation criteria.
  • SSC members fill out poll individually to organize thoughts on candidates.
  • SSC meets to review poll results, deliberate on candidates and come to preliminary agreement of ranking of candidates.
  • Consensus call is held by non-objection on the mailing list after meeting.
  • SSC submits recommendation to GNSO Council for its consideration.
• Typically two-to-three meetings per selection process.
• Question: What happens if a member of the SSC is also a candidate for a selection process? Answer: It is not a problem, but you will have to recuse yourself for that particular selection process.
• The evaluation poll is not a vote with a firm score, but includes ranking with an algorithm.  The poll does not dictate the results; there just needs to be a clear rationale for why the SSC made its choice.

3. Volunteers to Serve as SSC Chair and Vice Chair

• Not a sustained all-year commitment.  Good for someone who wants to be a new leader in an ICANN group.
• Peter Akinremi has volunteered for Vice Chair.
• Arinola Akinyemi has volunteered for Chair.

  early January 2020: SSC meeting to discuss Fellowship Mentor candidates (members should complete poll at least 24 hours before the meeting)
  10 January 2020: Motion Deadline for January GNSO meeting – placeholder motion possible
  19 January 2020 Last day to submit name(s) of recommended candidate(s)
  20 January 2020: GNSO Council meeting
