I would agree with you, but the amount of effort needed to keep the data in sync would be tremendous and most likely to be never achieved, and so would be the effort to get all registrars/registries to implement this extension.

A simpler solution could be just to:

• have a note at the end of the whois result (registry) indicating that the expiry date field corresponds to the domain lifecycle, and that it should check with the registrar with regards to the contracted service (if applicable).

• Or a note on the registrar whois explaining that the expiry date denotes the expiration date of the service.

• Or both :-).
