Re: [lac-discuss-en] [lac-discuss-es] CONSULTA A LA REGION: Pautas de revisión de similitud de cadenas
[[-- Translated text (es -> en) --]] Marcelo, Thank you very much for presenting the topic for consultation by our community. It's extremely important. In this case, furthermore, it is a proposal relatively easy to read and possibly also quite direct analysis: The question is whether in the new gTLD program of the future, the "strings" or "strings" of underlined characters can generate similarity in degree of confusion with the ununderlined equivalents. The document analyzes a very specific case, a language in which the "o" without underlining and Underlined represents different letters. It seems to me that it is not necessary resort to that subtle case to observe that in domain names of the next round, UNDERLINES SHOULD NOT BE AUTHORIZED, to avoid confusion among end users and thus also avoid the abuses that this confusion would make possible. "icann.org" and "icann.*org*" are indistinguishable except for those who are really looking for the difference. On the other hand, the argument could be made that among the community represented in At Large, or another, it might be considered useful to propose a new gTLD with one or more underlined characters. We would then be forced to make a balance between profits and the freedom to do such proposals, and the risks, already indicated, for the user general Internet, with emphasis on those who least have access to all types and technical training. In my opinion, the balance is overwhelmingly unfavorable to underlining. For this reason, I present the motion that we support Marcelo in a vote in favor of the complete exclusion of underlined characters in the new gTLDs.
