may I recommend the addition of an indicator to the "marketplace health index": number and fraction of defensive domain-name registrations.
There are studies by people like Ben Edelman ior similar approaches that look at this question and they should be performed periodically.
Monitoring the aftermarket is also very important. If there is an active aftermarket it may mean that the names are actually in demand and in use.
Both indicators together are useful to see if users of DNS registrations are indeed finding unused names for their products and services, or whether, in the contrary sense, there is an unacceptable level of cybersquatting and consumer-unfriendly speculation
with the new names.
