I'm excited to write my first email to the KeepItOn list -- and it's good news! The U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva is considering a renewal of the so-called "internet resolution," a measure that Sweden and other members of the internet "core group" of states (Brazil, Tunisia, Nigeria, Turkey, the US) authored first in 2012, and again in 2014. The resolution affirms that human rights apply online as they do offline.

This year, the draft contains new, strong language on internet shutdowns -- or as they call them, intentional disruptions -- and calls out attacks against those exercising their rights online. It's a good step forward for #KeepItOn, and we want the Council to pass it by consensus.

To help the resolution forward, we ask that you reach out to your foreign ministries, to ensure they co-sponsor the resolution. Article 19 has a good post on co-sponsoring ( https://www.article19.org/resources.php/resource/38422/en/unhrc:-strong-reso... ), and the latest draft of the text is attached.

We expect adoption to happen next Thursday, June 30. If that happens, please be ready to spread the word that the Human Rights Council *condemns* internet shutdowns.
