Preparation for telephone conference on 26th of January
Dear GP members I’ll try to summarize what we have done in previous two weeks, and what we shall discuss during our next call: 1. Information on Mats Dufberg and Denis Tan Tanaka added in tables in sections 2.1 and 2.2.1 of the Proposal https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eSk8rIwR4Kev9v0SJrllawVt_GWYBHVU-YB6Kkw3... I am politely asking Denis and Mats to look to these tables and make necessary corrections 2. We had some discussions on diacritics between Mats and Sarmad, this topic should be concluded, some volunteers needed to correct or add necessary information. 3. Last week I sent the results of previous GP work. We must try to fill 3.2 Proposed schedules of meetings and teleconferences Next call is scheduled for 26th od January. Sarmad will soon circulate the remainder. Best regards Mirjana

I think this schedule will be the biggest issue. Already in the last conference we talked about it and couldn't find any sensible value for the time we will need to fulfil the tasks. According to Sarmad's information (thank you for providing this, by the way), we will most likely need to go through each language one by one. So in my opinion we have two choices: 1. Everybody takes one language and starts working on it (of course this mustn't be a straightforward languages). Then we can make a projection on how long it would take to do all languages. 2. We do a very rough calculation based on the number of languages we need to look at and the time it took other groups to finish their work. For me, either solution would be ok. Dear colleagues, as I tried to express earlier, the statistics we have on language and writing are very imprecise. Estimations speak of ca. 6000-7000 languages globally. I couldn't find any scholarly estimates on how many languages globally have some written form using Roman/Latin script, however I could find a figure of 500 African languages (out of ca. 2000) having some written from, most of them using Roman/Latin script, and personally I don't find this figure to be unrealistic. No matter how we would try to estimate global figures on the basis of such areal ones, the number will be way too high for us to walk from language to language, which is why I would opt for going from codepoint to codepoint. Regarding the schedules, I think one way to get some idea about the time required would be if we were to consider the size of our codepoint repertoire and then compare it e.g. to the size of the repertoire Arabic GP had to work with. However that would still not be overly realistic, since the accessibility of expertise and knowledge on these orthographies will have a much larger impact on the speed and quality of our analysis. Anyhow I don't think it would be a problem to simply explain the facts and the difficulties within the proposal and then indicate that any current estimate is speculative for now. I hope this is helpful. Best wishes, Meikal On 24 January 2017 at 13:43, Michael Bauland <Michael.Bauland@knipp.de> wrote:
