It is with deep grief and sad hearts that the Internet Society - Lebanon Chapter announces the passing away of its Vice- President Nabil Bukhalid, on January 3, 2023.
Nabil was considered the “Father of the Internet” in Lebanon, through his pioneering and significant efforts to the development of the Internet in Lebanon since the early 90s, by establishing the Lebanese Domain Registry (LBDR) and serving as administrator and registrar for the .LB ccTLD since its creation in 1993 till today. He also contributed to many Internet governance, strategic planning, capacity-building and research efforts in the EMEA region.
Nabil was also the founder of the Lebanese Academic and Research Network (LARN), co-founder of the Lebanese Broadband Manifesto Support Group (LBSG) and BeirutIX, the first Internet Exchange Point in Lebanon. He is also a co-founder and ex-President of the Internet Society Lebanon Chapter, co-founder and CEO of the Lebanese Internet Center.
In 2017, he was an inductee in the prestigious Internet Hall of Fame, hence an inspiration to all of us in the region.
He attended AUB, where he earned both his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (1981) and EMBA (2006). May he Rest In Peace.
