Position on the NomCom representing the NA region
Evan is busy at the moment, and he asked me to send this message on his behalf. We have just recently learned that the ALAC must select its five people to sit on next year's Nominating Committee by September 1st. The 2009 NomCom will select three members of the ICANN Board of Directors, three ALAC members, two GNSO Councillors and one ccNSO Councillor. The process is that the three ALAC members from North America must identify their candidate by August 25th, to allow for the required 7 day voting period within the ALAC. Normally this vote simply ratifies the candidate identified by the three NA committee members. Presumably if the three of us (Robert, Beau and I) cannot agree, the ALAC would have to make the decision for us (but I don't believe this has happened before). We are soliciting suggestions for this position. Only people who are willing to serve should be named. The person will be expected to participate actively in all NomCom activities including the solicitation and evaluation of candidates. ICANN pays travel costs to NomCom meetings, but not to ICANN meetings. If the two are held at the same location and time, travel costs are covered, but it is unclear whether or not living costs for the entire ICANN meeting are covered. Desirable qualities include: - Knowledge of ICANN and its various organizations - Broad range of contacts to help solicit applications to the NomCom - Understanding of the needs of ALAC and the broader user community - Willingness to put the required time and effort into the process Since the time is short, we can only entertain suggestion made within the next few days. We will try to put a firm date to this shortly. Alan
Would it be possible for the rest of us to find out whom the three Committee members have selected as the NomCom candidate? Last year the NARALO managed to select a candidate that hailed from the registrar constituency so obviously we are wondering if this year you will be in similar fashion selecting as a user representative Chuck Gomes from VeriSign :) --- On Thu, 8/14/08, Alan Greenberg <alan.greenberg@mcgill.ca> wrote:

Danny and all, A very good question/request. Although Chuck is a very fine fellow, many might doubt his interest being user oriented and perhaps have doubt objectivity that any would represent registrants that hails from a registry or registrar. Such a "Selection" method/process is showing it's lack of legitimacy if such a selection could take place. Perhaps the members themselves should first "Elect" whom they choose to represent their constituency, rather than a "Selection" committee? In the interest of an open and transparent process, Selecting a representative being unsure of that selection being the will of the members seems less than bottom-up as well... Danny Younger wrote:

Probably not on the charts, but perhaps we could name Edmon Chung, former GNSO Registry Councillor (.asia) but who is currently Secretariat of the APRALO.
Alan and all, This also would leave the apearance that users issues would not be well represented given Edmon's Registry affiliation. Not a good choice, IMO. Alan Greenberg wrote:
