ICANN closes barn door after 13 years
Folks, Kevin Murphy is reporting that "ICANN has introduced background checks for companies applying for accreditation." "Introduced" as in: never been done before. I was under the impression they always did this, but it explains why there are so many rogue Registrars. It supports the contention that they have not been properly vetting Registrars from the get go. http://domainincite.com/icann-tries-to-limit-rogue-registrars/ -Garth ------------------------------------- Garth Bruen http://www.knujon.com http://www.linkedin.com/pub/4/149/724 Linkedin Group: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1870205 Blog: http://www.circleid.com/members/3296/ Twitter: @Knujon Shop: http://www.cafepress.com/knujon Bookstore: http://astore.amazon.com/knujocom-20
We've had issues with new TLD pre-registration activities and scams going all the way back to 2000 when the FTC needed to post a consumer alert. Problems re-surfaced when .eu was on the horizon, and now I see that the new gTLD pre-registration games have begun. See https://www.uniteddomains.com/ntld/pre-register-new-domains It looks like we'll need to start carefully monitoring these developments.
Well, I'm gratified to see that .nyc is the top geographic tld and #6 over all. :) I'm not sure their info page on it accurately reflects respondents to the city's RFP however, and mid 2012 is *very* optimistic. https://www.uniteddomains.com/new-top-level-domain/nyc-domain-registration/ What are you suggesting be done, Danny? j On Sun, Jun 5, 2011 at 9:53 PM, Danny Younger <dannyyounger@yahoo.com>wrote:

I wasn't too keen on their info page regarding .usa either, but it was somewhat amusing to read through their terms and conditions and find an anti-pornography clause (especially as they were accepting pre-registrations for .xxx). For now, let's just remain alert --- On Sun, 6/5/11, Joly MacFie <joly@punkcast.com> wrote: From: Joly MacFie <joly@punkcast.com> Subject: Re: [NA-Discuss] Pre-registrations To: "Danny Younger" <dannyyounger@yahoo.com> Cc: na-discuss@atlarge-lists.icann.org, "Garth Bruen at Knujon.com" <gbruen@knujon.com> Date: Sunday, June 5, 2011, 10:41 PM Well, I'm gratified to see that .nyc is the top geographic tld and #6 over all. :) I'm not sure their info page on it accurately reflects respondents to the city's RFP however, and mid 2012 is *very* optimistic. https://www.uniteddomains.com/new-top-level-domain/nyc-domain-registration/ What are you suggesting be done, Danny? j On Sun, Jun 5, 2011 at 9:53 PM, Danny Younger <dannyyounger@yahoo.com> wrote: We've had issues with new TLD pre-registration activities and scams going all the way back to 2000 when the FTC needed to post a consumer alert.
