Nomination period open for interim NARALO rep to ALAC
Hello all, As many of you may have read, this morning Robert Guerra sent a message to the global At-Large mailing list announcing his resignation from the position of NARALO representative to ALAC. As a result, we have a vacancy that requires filling. At the NARALO conference call this past Monday, I indicated to the group that Robert had emailed me with his intent to step down; in anticipation of that action we agreed upon a replacement procedure that would be both expedient and reasonably transparent. This is because Robert's 2-year term expires this June and the position will be up for election in May anyway. The person appointed now will be expected to participate in ALAC activities starting immediately upon appointment, attend the ICANN meeting in Mexico as part of ALAC rather than the Summit (the two schedules are not identical) as well as the ICANN meeting to be held June in Sydney. (Travel expenses will be covered.) According to the process decided on Monday, I will be accepting nominations for the vacancy up until the end of Sunday (January 18). Self-nominations are acceptable; you do not need a seconder and should submit your nomination to me directly by email. I will obviously not be standing for nomination myself. If I receive no nominations by Sunday I will start actively soliciting people until I get one willing to serve. If I receive one nomination by Sunday I will immediately appoint that person to serve the vacancy. If I receive more than one nomination by Sunday I will request the nominees to produce a brief (500 words or less) summary of why they they should be selected. Those summaries should be circulated on this mailing list. By Friday Jan 23 I will start polling NARALO members to determine a consensus selection, and appoint that person to the position. If there is no clear consensus I will appoint the person I believe to have attracted the most support. I myself will only participate in the selection process in order to resolve a lack of consensus. - Evan
Dear Evan and all: One correction: All ALAC Members' terms are aligned with the ICANN AGMs, therefore, whomever is elected to fill the vacancy has a term which ends at the close of the ICANN AGM of 2009, which will be in Seoul, South Korea from 25-30 October. Evan and Nick, Can you refresh us on the qualifications? Must someone be a member of an ALS or can we nominate someone who is unaffiliated with an ALS? -- Bret

In NARALO individual members are certainly welcome to stand for nomination. That is, anyone receiving this message is likely eligible. - Evan
Hello all, In accordance with the process approved at last week's NARALO conference call. Upon receipt of Robert Guerra's resignation from his position of NARALO rep to ALAC I put out a call for nominations with a closing deadline of the end of Sunday (yesterday). By the end of that day I have received a number of questions regarding the position, and a clarification from Nick regarding the term of this interim position. However, I have received only a single nomination, from Gareth Shearman. The nomination period is now closed. In accordance with the procedures outlined and agreed to last week, since only one nomination was received before the deadline it is my intention to notify the Chair of ALAC and ICANN staff that Gareth will be serving the remainder of Robert's term as the NARALO representative to ALAC, effective January 21. The purpose of the two-day delay is to offer a forum for any objections to the execution of the procedure as agreed to at last week's NARALO teleconference. I want to thank Gareth for his offer of service, congratulate him on his pending appointment, and wish him all the best in the role he be about to take on. I have no doubt whatsoever of his qualification and suitability for the role. I also wish to thank the members of NARALO for enabling a selection process that I believed to be expedient yet fair and transparent. And I also want to thank Robert for the service he has provided us as the NARALO representative until now. - Evan
Though I will await the 'official notification' I must say that having worked with Gareth so extensively in the At-Large Summit Planning WG I do look forward to his contribution to the ALAC on NARALO's behalf and am confident that the energy and enthusiasm that he will bring to our dynamic will be both positive and productive...
