New York City plans to raise cash selling .nyc domains
[excerpt] During a Thursday address, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said the ".nyc" domain will start generating a fresh stream of revenue for the city next summer. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced during her state-of-the-city address Thursday that the “.nyc” domain will start generating a fresh stream of revenue for the city next summer. dotNYC, a private group, has asked the city to let it sell Web addresses such as www.GrimaldisPizza.nyc or www.EmpireStateBuilding.nyc for about $10 a pop to people, corporations and small businesses. In return, the company would give the city one-third of the domain's profits. However, a city spokesman says officials have not yet chosen a partner for the project. The city may decide to send out a request for proposals. http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20090212/SMALLBIZ/902129975

FYI, the plan brought to New York City Council Speaker Quinn's attention for her speech, and referenced by Crain's (and other press) is the one presented by me (at the 1:24:35 mark) in testimony after Tom Lowenhaupt's lengthy exposition and directly after Paul Garrin's contentious testimony. The YouTube version (fast forwarding possible) is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA1pLg1eM6A I am trying to get a video of Speaker Quinn's speech and will post it when I get it on http://www.dotnyc.net and send a link here. Antony P.S. Many thanks to Joly for getting this on tape. On Feb 13, 2009, at 7:05 PM, WWWhatsup wrote:
