Hi, As an ICANN-meeting virgin I have some questions: 1) What's the dress convention? That is, I expect that many meetings will be informal (given the temps in June I expect they will NEED to be casual), but how much -- if any -- of the conference is typically suit-and-tie formal? 2) Have Jacob or Nick planned any kind of orientation for newcomers? Tossing us unprepared into a den of bureaucracy and power struggles does not serve our constituencies -- or the RALO process. Some informal sessions on "ICANN Culture" would be extremely helpful, as I imagine that only a shred of the nuances and realities can be expressed well in (publicly archived :-) ) email. This would be a great opportunity for the veterans of this list to help us newcomers understand why they're so damned cynical. :-) As it is we'll be missing the generic "orientation round table" because that conflicts with the all-day NARALO meeting on the 24th. Please can we have this? If room availability is a problem, let's take it to a restaurant or something. This element of the meeting is as important to me as many of the other parts. However, if I'm the only one interested in this, never mind... 3) In the full schedule at http://sanjuan2007.icann.org/schedule/ I note that some meetings are explicitly listed as closed, yet some are explicitly listed as open. To what part of this schedule do we common ALS folk have access? - Evan
1) What's the dress convention?
They probably won't let you into the hotel if you're not wearing shoes and a shirt. Other than that, it's up to you. Vint will wear his usual three piece suit. I'd say the median dress-up level is a golf shirt with the logo of some other meeting and chinos. Keep in mind that although San Juan will be very hot, the meeting rooms may well have the A/C set at about 15.
2) Have Jacob or Nick planned any kind of orientation for newcomers? Tossing us unprepared into a den of bureaucracy and power struggles does not serve our constituencies --
The newcomers lunch is almost entirely newcomers, so it's not all that helpful. The main thing to realize is that ICANN works through personal relationships far more than by its nominal processes, so conversations in the halls and in the bars where you get to know the people who matter (board and staff, in particular) are key. It's easy to recognize the board members, they're the ones with the swarms of people following them around.
3) In the full schedule at http://sanjuan2007.icann.org/schedule/ I note that some meetings are explicitly listed as closed, yet some are explicitly listed as open. To what part of this schedule do we common ALS folk have access?
Should be everything that's not explicitly closed. R's, John
Dress convention: Smart Casual. Additional support: - Call me any time 310 437 3956 or stop me in the hall. - There will be an ICANN Booth with staffers ready to guide and answer questions. ICANN Roundtable Orientation 1330-1430 San Cristobal B room See: http://sanjuan2007.icann.org/node/14 Optional (please feel free to attend!) Daily ICANN Fellowships Participants Meeting 1600-1700 Las Olas Room See: http://sanjuan2007.icann.org/node/58 ---- It is confusing for the first meeting so don't hesitate to ask anyone for guidance/advice during the sessions. There are a lot of cynics in ICAN but also some optimists. : ) keep an eye out for both. cheers, Jacob.
From the ICANN Board meeting minutes:
"Paul Twomey provided information that ICANN will be undertaking a public consultation on representations that it has received from the ITU on .INT and accompanying policies. The US Department of Commerce has written to ICANN asking for advice from on the steps being taken to advance the issue and ICANN will be replying separately. ICANN currently administers .INT as part of the IANA function." FYI: The registration policies of ICANN's .INT registry have impacted the IGO community (as the registry allows only one registration per IGO; accordingly an IGO cannot register both its name and its acronym/abbreviation). This is one part of the argument calling for enhanced protections for IGOs. The topic may become part of a PDP if the GNSO Council votes to approve consideration of the subject matter at the upcoming San Juan session. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Shape Yahoo! in your own image. From the Board meeting minutes:
The Chair provided a brief summary of the key points of Ombudsman Report 6.317 that has been provided to the Board. The complainant was the proponent of the application for the establishment of an At-Large Structure, which was rejected by the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC). The applicant made the application on 08 February 2006, and the application was rejected by the ALAC in October, 2006. The applicant was informed of the decision by email on October 5, 2006. The applicant has, through correspondence to the ALAC on October 7, requested a review by the Office of the Ombudsman. The Ombudsmans investigation lead him to believe that the applicant was treated in an unfair manner on both an individual and systemic basis. On November 21, 2006, the Committee advised the applicant in an email that they would be in contact following the Sao Paulo meeting (December 2006). The Ombudsman has made 12 recommendations. Among them was a recommendation that the applicant be given interim status, but the Chair noted that there was no status of that kind to be awarded. The Ombudsman also asked the Board to declare ALAC membership to the applicant. The Chair suggested that a response be developed before the next meeting of the Board at San Juan with staff support. Additionally, Roberto Gaetano asked that staff advise the Ombudsman that the report had been considered and notify him that a response would be forthcoming. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Take the Internet to Go: Yahoo!Go puts the Internet in your pocket: mail, news, photos & more. http://mobile.yahoo.com/go?refer=1GNXIC

Randy: There no shuttle, at least not yet. There are three ways to get to the carribel hilton: 1. Affordable taxi - there are at times organge coloured taxi's close to the hotel. They will cost you about 5$ USD to get to the carribe hilton 2. Official taxi - more like minivan's. They are labelled "taxi touristico" and are also by the hotel. They will cost you about 10 USD to the carribe hilton 3. Walk - It's a about a 15 min walk. - Exit the hotel - turn right to walk down Ponce de Leon (avenue) - once you reach the end of the street, turn left...from there continue walking. you'll cross a bridge. While on the bridge you should see the carribe hilton hotel - after you've passed the bridge, just follow the street - you'll eventually haev to take the right fork to get to the carribe Some of the Caribbean At-large members as well as Jacqueline and I are in the "las holas" room - where there is a day long presentation on the status of country domains in the carribean. I believe there will be a presentation from CIRA (the operator of .CA) on or around 3pm. hope to you see you soon. regards, Robert --- Robert Guerra <rguerra@privaterra.ca> Managing Director, Privaterra Tel +1 416 893 0377 On 23-Jun-07, at 11:14 AM, RJGlass | America@Large wrote:
