Non Profit Technology Conference and RightsCon
Hi Since we are exchanging ideas to expand the awareness of NPOC in civil society perhaps we should consider the opportunities to attend NTEN's annual conference called NTC which this year was in Portland, Oregon Details at https://www.nten.org/ Important to note that PIR was a platinum sponsor and NTEN was the first critical group from civil society that questioned the sale of ISOC back a few years ago ( Note I was on the board but did not vote or participant in this discussion at the time). It's worth submitting a proposal for conducting a session. Another good option is attending RIGHTSCON which is in Costa Rico this year. Hi Judith I recall at NTEN they were speaking loudly about sessions about Persons with Disabilities but they had to compete with the conference favourites. Its a bit of a popularity contest sometimes to get the audience, its sad but thats the reality Glenn McKnight, MA Virtual School of Internet Governance Chief Information Officer www.virtualsig.org *YOUR SOURCE FOR INTERNET GOVERNANCE EDUCATION * *Mobile 437-237-4655* On Sun, 14 May 2023 at 18:47, Judith Hellerstein <judith@jhellerstein.com> wrote:

I agree with you. Anyway, in case where the NPOC is engaged in such an events, there will be more NPOs to attend these sessions too. The DNS Operational Concerns remain the NPOC mission within ICANN ecosystem, imho. Warm regards Olévié Le dim. 14 mai 2023, 23:04, Glenn McKnight <mcknight.glenn@gmail.com> a écrit :

Never been to NTEN. I can say that RightsCon is not ready (technically nor at other levels) for anything DNS related at this point in time; it's seriously out of the radar despite the odd DNSSEC chit chat. Technical sessions are rare and there's usually little interest in DNS. People with technical background represent barely 10%(?) of the audience. People with policy making background are definitely abundant, however. My point: Yes, we should be there + we need to strategize how is that done and what does that mean for NPOC. My initial thoughts is that we should be introducing DNS-related topics and policies slowly until we can build a certain base of interested people. Jean F. Dear Jean, Good day, just interjecting here, Access Now who created rightscon their focus is not on DNS, so that says it all, it won't change as the domain they cover is pretty neccessary and loads to do as digital rights takje various dimensions in today's world. I have attended various Rightscon events and have done sessions that focus on digital rights centric issues. Our NPOC community focuses on DNS issues related to not for profits. We should stick to that area as a lot is not yet covered by us as NPOC. In the early days of NPOC we had sessions at the IGF focusing on NPOC work. I spoke in those sessions we put proposals for etc. Now even in IGF we don't as a community propose and run sessions etc. The last session NPOC had in an IGF was in Baku, Azerbaijan. I will suggest after the elections just as we did in 2012 NPOC should come out with a two year strategy of its core engagement that it wants to focus on, it will guide all, especially giving NPOC a clear policy direction and what events it should attend that aligns with its core mandate thats what happened in 2012 our Late chair Alain Berranger of blessed memory despite is ill health then worked hard to get a strategy in place. Yes, the ideal situation would be for a bi-annual (short of an annual) strategy to attend not only these but other events. That was on my radar the moment I was nominated for Comms. Tailoring our submissions to the topics of each event will indeed be part of the strategy. And then build the necessary CTAs. I think with the amount of members we have (despite needing to have a deeper look for "missing areas"), we may be able to attend in many places. Jean F.

I totally agree with @Jean. I have been attending RightCon meetings since the Brussels meeting in 2017. Yes, CSOs are not ready for DNS conversation but with the rise of concerns regarding DNS abuse, content moderation, etc., this can become a wider conversation at RightCon, maybe we should start proposing sessions during these meetings and the IGF so that the stakeholders understand that the DNS conversation is not limited to the technical layer and that ICANN despite its technical mandate, has the responsibility to safeguard cultural rights (ref> to the dot-Patagonia and dot-amazon brouhaha in the past). The details of these cases can be the starting point for this conversation. With regard to NTEN, NPOC can really benefit from that only when we incorporated it as a non for profit. We had hours of conversation in the past if I recall during Joan’s term and Raoul’s first term to incorporated NPOC but, we did not succeed mainly due to the regular change of Leadership and the signatories to the bank account. But if we want to move forward, this can bite a good starting point at least to benefit from the Google for Non-for profit and Microsoft initiatives and funding from donors to manage our own projects and support member organisations. PS: the list is becoming active, I hope it remains active with such enriching conversations after the elections …:) Emmanuel Vitus, MA (PMP® , PSM1) Tech Policy Researcher - Working for a Free, Open & Inclusive Internet | NPOC Secretary General | Ex Coms & Research Lead @ParadigmHQ | Ex @Google Policy | Mobile: +33 763102234 My WiFi connects automatically in France & Togo

Bonjour Vitus. +1 for DNS abuse concern to promote within these spaces : RightCon and/or NTEN. ICANN and others entities have produced enough documentation about this concern. The moderation of content is out of ICANN field. Warm regards Olévié Le lun. 15 mai 2023, 12:53, Emmanuel Vitus via Npoc-discuss < npoc-discuss@icann.org> a écrit :
