Most big Internet have already similar access points for authorized law enforcement entities in place. Not sure how the Apple system will differ - if at all - to those services. I recommended to look into this many times to ICANN. But one has to admit the complexity is higher for ICANN/registrar/registries. Erika Sent from my iPhone

I think this is a different system from what could be used for WHOIS, it uses a possibility under ECPA and the IE data protection law to provide information on subscriber data and metadata and is based on individual review of each order. And it's company-specific as there are no horizontal standards for these requests yet. But indeed, it shows that cooperation between LEA and the private sector already works well in a related area and can serve as inspiration! All best Cathrin

I am not so sure it will be that different as the replacement protocal for WHOIS will also need the ability for individual review of each data request. I agree that access standards that apply more universally will have to be developed but there is no reason these cannot be based on other models, such as this one.
