Understanding DNS Query Composition at B-Root
Hi Dessalegn, Thanks for sharing, it's a nice read. - Interesting to know that Chromium based queries are on the rise. I believe DNS Prefetching by Omnibox is probably one of the reasons for the DNS traffic. https://www.chromium.org/developers/design-documents/dns-prefetching/ - Also, in my opinion Priming Queries are expected to rise especially due to the rapid adoption of Kubernetes based clouds (with private DNS resolvers for pods). This may cause an exponential increase in the global population of DNS resolvers in future. FYI: This paper has been added to the RSSAC's Zotero library. https://www.zotero.org/groups/4859802/rssac_caucus Kind regards *Hafiz Farooq* --- This message has been scanned via Symantec MessageLabs & SpamDefense Engine On Fri, Aug 18, 2023 at 5:53 PM Dessalegn Yehuala < mequanint.yehuala@gmail.com> wrote:

Are they? See https://blog.verisign.com/domain-names/chromiums-reduction-of-root-dns-traff... and Figure 6 in the paper. Peter -- https://desec.io/

See https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://blog.verisign.com/domain-names/chromiums... [blog[.]verisign[.]com] and Figure 6 in the paper.
This paper doesn’t say they are increasing. <https://arxiv.org/pdf/2308.07966.pdf> "We see a gradual increase in Chromium-originating queries from 2013 through 2020, followed by a sharp decline after 2020 following a change to Omnibox’s probing process." In addition to the link from Peter we also see a significant drop in UDP query packet-sizes 16-31 and 32-47 starting around January 2021. <https://rssac002.root-servers.org/sizes_single.html> I think it’s fair to say that Chromium queries peaked at the end of 2020 and have declined since then. —Andrew
