Dear RZ-LGR SG members,

I have revised the letter from the SG to the ICANN Board, mostly by re-organizing the contents of the draft letter shared earlier.  Kindly review the letter and let me know if you have any feedback.

I plan to send this letter across to the ICANN Board later today on behalf of the SG, after hearing back from you.

Regards,
Sarmad

Dear Sarmad,

I have made minor modifications on the draft letter- my suggestions are highlighted in bold face, and those highlighted in red to be removed.

RE: Employing Root Zone Label Generation Rules for TLDs

With the availability of the  [icann.org]Root Zone Label Generation Rules (RZ-LGR) [icann.org] and its fundamental role envisaged in defining the variant labels of top-level domains (TLDs) in the recommendations for managing IDN variant TLDs [icann.org], which were  [icann.org]approved [icann.org] by the ICANN Board in March 2019, the Board had requested (asked) the ICANN community (including  [icann.org]Supporting Organizations (SOs), Advisory Committees (ACs) [icann.org], and  [icann.org]Internet Architecture Board (IAB) [icann.org]) to study and recommend how to technically apply the RZ-LGR in a harmonized way to gTLDs and ccTLDs.

In response to (To address) the request from the ICANN Board, the RZ-LGR Study Group (SG) was formed from the nominees of SOs, ACs, and IAB and additional volunteers from the ICANN community following the  [icann.org]call for formation [icann.org] floated in February 2018.

After its formation, the RZ-LGR SG first determined the scope of its work, and enriched it with feedback received from the community through the first  [icann.org]public comment [icann.org] call in August 2018.  The SG has deliberated the relevant technical details based on this scope and has developed a set of recommendations, which were released in the second  [icann.org]public comment [icann.org] in May 2019. After incorporating the community feedback, the RZ-LGR SG has finalized the Recommendations for the Technical Utilization of the Root Zone Label Generation Rules, which are documented in the report attached.

As next steps, as per the request by the ICANN Board, these recommendations are to be published and then submitted to the ICANN Board for further consideration.  The study group is sharing the report with you in advance, in anticipation of these being published by ICANN organization website on <date>, for your information and for any final feedback.

With kind regards,

Dennis Tan Tanaka

(on behalf of the RZ-LGR Study Group)
