The goal of the Drafting Team would be to assist staff in developing the format, questions, response scale and scope of the survey. In May 2009 by the GNSO Council requested that staff prepare a compilation of potential future requirements for WHOIS service, based on current requirements and a review of previous GNSO WHOIS policy discussions. This resolution reflected increasing community concerns that the current WHOIS service is deficient in a number of ways, including data accuracy and reliability, as well as in other technical areas noted in recent SSAC reports, such as accessibility and readability of WHOIS contact information in an international environment. The report is a compendium of potential technical requirements and makes no policy recommendations. Some of the potential technical requirements included in the report are the following: a mechanism to find authoritative WHOIS servers; structured queries; a standardized set of query capabilities; a well-defined schema for replies; standardized error messages; improved quality of domain registration data; internationalization; security elements; thick vs. thin WHOIS; and a Registrar abuse point of contact. Staff published a first draft of the report 26 March 2010, solicited input from SOs and ACs, and posted a draft final report reflecting SO and AC input on 31 May. Thus, on 19 May the GNSO Council asked ICANN staff to begin the process of seeking community volunteers Drafting Team for the purpose of developing a survey of views. This invitation is extended to all members of the ICANN community. We urge you to forward to this to all members of the community who may be interested in participating. Expertise in the technical aspects of gTLD Whois, and background on the history of gTLD Whois policy development, would be particularly useful to this group. Details of Wed's session on Whois

Dear tech-whois group, Welcome again to San Francisco ICANN meeting, below please find some details of our session. Our session has been moved to 1600-1730 at Elizabethan D on Wed (start half an hour earlier). Note this is a smaller room that can only hold about 40 people. If space is an issue, we will give priority to those on the mailing list. The remote participation link is: http://icann.adobeconnect.com/sfo40-elizabethan-d Andy Newton from ARIN will present RESTFul Whois service deployed at ARIN first. We will then go directly into a discussion about requirements. To make best use of our discussion, we encourage you think think about possible requirements ahead of time, and post to the mailing list if you could. Staff also prepared an initial list of requirements from the Whois service requirement report for discussion. As a background, in May 2009 GNSO council requested staff to compile a comprehensive set of requirements for WHOIS that includes: 1) known deficiencies in the current service and, 2) any possible requirements that may be needed to support various policy initiatives that have been suggested in the past. In compiling this report, staff has attempted to distil from current requirements and policy discussions the technical requirements that would be necessary to implement to correct deficiencies and implement various policy proposals. As requested by the GNSO, staff shared the initial draft with the GNSO Council and with the other SOs (ccNSO, ASO) and ACs (SSAC, ALAC and GAC) for their input. GNSO groups, ALAC, and SSAC have provided comments. I think there's a fourth point in the 3 deficiencies of the WHOIS protocol that are enumerated in page 3, under "Extending the existing WHOIS protocol:" subtitle. That's the "Referrals" item. Even when is mentioned in the RWhois description and as a implicit benefit of the HTTP protocol, I believe is of great importance and should be one of the key requirement of an improved whois, whatever solution will be. 2. IMHO there's a chance of another option for improving whois: create a new "application-transport" layer in IRIS (such as BEEP and LWZ) that uses HTTP. In that way you benefit from the data standarization of IRIS (request/response format, schemas, entities) and the work of the IETF, and you gain all the benefits of using RWS with the existing web infrastructure and expertise. SF session Agenda

Hello All, First of all, thank you all for your responses regarding the SF meeting agenda. Based on the comments received, we will go ahead to ask Andy speak on RWS. We will also adjust the agenda of the meeting to include a discussion of requirements based on recent conversations and requests. Revised Agenda: - Introduction - Overview of RESTful Whois [presentation by Andy Newton, Chief Engineer, ARIN] [35 minutes] - Discussion on the barriers for the adoption of IRIS (particularly from an operator's perspective), and any important lessons we can learn from the development of the IRIS protocol. [15 minutes] - Discussion on the requirements for a new directory service for registration data. [30 minutes] - Discussion of next steps and process [10 minutes] If we run out of time, and there is continuing interest in the discussion of requirements. We will put in a request for a second session that solely focused on the requirements. Note at this late in the agenda scheduling, it may be difficult to get a space. If we can't get a room, this could be a conversation at the hotel coffee shop. To make the best use of our time in SF, as Michael Young suggested I will send some documents about requirements in a separate email, and encourage the group read and comment before the SF meeting. SF session details

Dear tech-whois group, Good news. We were able to invite Andy Newton, one of the key engineers behind ARIN's RESTful Whois implementation ( https://www.arin.net/resources/whoisrws/index.html) to give us an overview of RESTful Whois and ARIN's operational experience with it. Andy was also one of the authors of IETF CRISP requirement (RFC 3707), and the IRIS protocol (RFC 3981, 3982, 3983). We were unable to get a speaker for IRIS, so instead we will moderate a discussion on the reasons behind the lack of adoption for IRIS, and any important lessons we can learn from the development of the IRIS protocol. Lastly, there were discussions on the mailing list about proper process and next steps, ICANN staff will be available to answer questions on that.
