On the Mozilla front, I have been reaching out within the pool of developers that I know there on browser, OS, Mobile, and email clients.
With respect to email, I suspect we're not going to be able to count on Mozilla Thunderbird - the project has undergone some significant reductions in resourcing and staffing over the past 3-4 years, and it does not appear that there is a way to get improved support into the client.
There is a volunteer-only community effort to release an update in mid second quarter, but IDN is not on the list of proposed improvements.
