Don Hollander: (2/18/2015 07:59) Good morning everyone. Just a
reminder to MUTE unless you're speaking.
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:01) Hello Everyone
Ram Mohan: (08:01) @maxim ola
Dusan Stojicevic: (08:02) Hello Everyone
Don Hollander: (08:08) https://mm.icann.org/mailman/listinfo/ua-discuss
Brent London: (08:10) yes
Don Hollander: (08:10) Draft Charter:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1D4Y6AkpPjlCHBw50sfFXIegTuEOCeeXfv1l_tp
4rMhc/edit?usp=sharing
Edmon: (08:11) if possible, don please also share the document on
adobeconnect
Edmon: (08:11) there may be those who are unable to connect with the
googledoc
Mark McFadden: (08:11) Just a note: the existing UA_Discuss mailing
list archives are not public. The current archive is only available to
the list members.
Ram Mohan: (08:11) @Mark, thanks for pointing that out - that was not
the intent. This will be an ACTION for ICANN staff to convert to public
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:19) +1 Edmon
Edmon: (08:21) in addition to what tony and ram said, since we are not
intended to be a "strict" group, i think the document should be a living
document, that it could change over time, (not to say that it wil keep
changing, but just that it should not make it overly hard to make changes
to it as things changes)
Ram Mohan: (08:21) +1 Edmon
Ram Mohan: (08:22) the SG could be the 3 chairs + the Project Group
chairs...
Jeff Sass, .CLUB: (08:23) Let's call them "issues" rather than
"problems." :-)
Ram Mohan: (08:24) @jeff, tomatoes, tomatos?
Edmon: (08:24) we can even call them work "items" to be even more
"positive" :-)
Jeff Sass, .CLUB: (08:24) @ram, not when word gets out to the public.
Rishi - CentralNic: (08:24) +1 Ram Mohan
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:24) +1 jeff - "TLD haters" are
latching on to a soundbite from the SG session claiming that new TLDs
break things
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:25) there should be some
sensitivity to this in our efforts
Pinky Brand: (08:25) +1 to Jeff's comment.
Richard Merdinger: (08:27) I was late and apologize for that
Ram Mohan: (08:27) @Jothan, @Jeff - agree to being sensitive, but i
think word on the street is that things aren't working ... are broken. We
should decide on our posture and our terminlogy. Just don't want to be
"cute" regarding what it is vs. what we call it
Ram Mohan: (08:27) ie, don't want an "emperor has no clothes" problem.
Having said that, we should be sensitive and decide how we represent the
problems/issues/items/ideas/etc.
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:28) @Ram very wisely put - and
to be fair, "TLD Haters" are going to latch on to whatever they find so
we should not let it hobble our focus
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:29) it is just worth having it
in mind
Ram Mohan: (08:29) Jothan + 1
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:29) http://ua.thedna.org is the
URL Brent is mentioning
Jeff Sass, .CLUB: (08:30) @Ram Umderstood, and not trying to hide the
reality of issues, but it is important to not present the new extensions
as "broken" as they are already in wide use and more being registered
every day. We're on the same page. Thanks.
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:31) +1
Ram Mohan: (08:31) @Jeff, agreed. We might need to decide on more
"frank" language internally, and more "polite" language in anything we
put out formally...
Jeff Sass, .CLUB: (08:32) @ram Exactly. Public image is important to
the whole program and the domain name space.
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:34) it might be a good idea to make exchange
of items (when reaching some milestones) between groups
Pinky Brand: (08:34) +1 to Ram and Jeff's thoughts re language
presentation. TLDs are not broken. They have functioned just fine for a
few decades..
Rubens Kuhl: (08:35) Just a comment: even the specialized media uses
terms like "broken":
http://domainincite.com/17997-group-forms-to-stop-new-gtlds-breaking-stuff
Edmon: (08:35) just a note that Don has his hand up... if you missed it
ram cause he is in the "Presenters" section
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:35) just one comment on IDN / UA
is that there are some blockage areas that including IDN is appropriate
and others where the majority of the issue simply requires the foundation
of being able to just work with new TLDs
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:36) before one could hope to get
the IDN dialog and attention happening
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:36) Do we refer by security issues in IDNs -
to SSL/TSL too?
Ram Mohan: (08:36) @Maxim - do you want to speak that into the call for
those not watching the chat?
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:36) @Ram - yes
Jeff Sass, .CLUB: (08:37) @Rubens Exactly. That's why it is so
important that consumer facing messaging does not reinforce the varius
biases of "insiders" with varying agendas. Our agenda is a positive
outcome for all domain names I think.
Ram Mohan: (08:37) tx
Rubens Kuhl: (08:39) I don't think this specific media outlet has a
bias on this, so it's an indication that even unbiased media trying to
spell UA in a simpler way ends up writing like this.
Chris: (08:39) I think one of the risks in splitting the issue into
multiple different parts, there is a risk of signaling to developers the
idea that this is a series of different problems to solve. This would
encourage fragmented support for the different aspects of the problem,
leading down a bad path.
Edmon: (08:40) @christian, today, when you get a namecard that has only
chinese on it u cant even read the name anyway?
Edmon: (08:40) there are often 2 sides of a business card one for local
community and one for "international" based on the "audeince" it is
intended for
Richard Merdinger: (08:42) Yes
Pinky Brand: (08:42) Yes
Brent London: (08:42) yes
Rishi - CentralNic: (08:42) yes
Dusan Stojicevic: (08:42) ok
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:42) yes
Johannes Lenz-Hawliczek, DOTZON: (08:42) k
Lars Steffen: (08:42) Yes
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:42) 2 weeks good
Mark McFadden: (08:42) yes
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:47) just comment - UA is a 2letter code from
ISO 3166 ... it might cause minor confusion outside of the industry...
Ram Mohan: (08:47) @Maxim - any alternative suggestions?
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:48) @Ram UAC ?
Mark McFadden: (08:49) That's an excellent summary, thanks @Ram.
Mark McFadden: (08:51) Are there minutes or notes from the Washington
DC meeting that coulld be shared with the larger group??
Mark McFadden: (08:52) Thank you Francisco.
Edmon: (08:52) @francisco, i think we should section out the particular
part on stocktaking of issues and prioritization so we have a focused
discussion (rther than sending the entire record)
Mark McFadden: (08:53) How hard would it be to have a termporary wiki
for the group?
Ram Mohan: (08:53) ACTIONS:1. Make Mailing list public2. Comments on
the charter, closing in 2 weeks time3. Put your names forward for Project
Groups you want to be a part of - over the next week4. Summarize comments
on charter, Project Groups etc. after 2 weeks5. Call for nominations
commences now, ends in 3 weeks time6. Web site for archive materials -
Francisco/Don
Mark McFadden: (08:55) I think this list of actions is just fine and
represents our discussion.
Edmon: (08:55) i am not usually someone who brings this up, as this is
the time of the day that works best for me to participate. however, i do
notice low participation from the asian community which i think is
important for this effort.
Christian Dawson: (08:56) Edmon I like your suggestion of finding a
time that suits the Asian community well
Richard Merdinger: (08:56) I cconcur
Mark McFadden: (08:57) +1
Francisco Arias: (08:57) there will be no time that works for everyone.
One way we have done this in ICANN WGs is to rotate the times to
distribute the pain. Just an idea.
Brent London: (08:57) +1
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (08:57) +1 for rotation
Gwen: (08:57) What would the "C" stand for in "UAC"?
Rishi - CentralNic: (08:58) @christian - yes
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (08:58) [humor] we also may want to
see if we need permission from Comcast to use the term 'Universal' ;)
Mark McFadden: (08:58) @christian Fine!
Richard Merdinger: (08:58) yes, please
Lars Steffen: (08:58) thanks christian!
Edmon: (08:58) ACceptance
Richard Merdinger: (08:58) Great idea Ram
Pinky Brand: (08:58) There will be virtually no feedback from anyone
located in China for the next two weeks as it is now the Chinese New
Year. Just FYI.
tony harris: (08:59) how to sign up to mail list
Mark McFadden: (08:59) That seems like a reasonable timeframe, @Ram.
Edmon: (09:00) can just send a note to the mailing list?
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (09:00) Could we suggest SOI of some kind to be
send with the position request?
Mark McFadden: (09:01) Okay, thanks everyone. Bye.
Jeff Sass, .CLUB: (09:01) Thanks all.
Don Hollander: (09:01) Thanks Ram. Thanks everyone.
Ram Mohan: (09:01) @Maxim, good idea
Johannes Lenz-Hawliczek, DOTZON: (09:01) thank you, bye
Maxim Alzoba (FAITID): (09:01) bye all
Rubens Kuhl: (09:01) Thanks all!
Jothan Frakes [Mozilla Volunteer]: (09:01) thanks all and to Ram and
Christian for their efforts
Dusan Stojicevic: (09:01) thanx, bye
Rishi - CentralNic: (09:01) @Ram thanks for chairing
Pinky Brand: (09:01) Thanks
Ram Mohan: (09:01) @Rishi, glad to.
Chris: (09:01) Thanks everyone.
Ram Mohan: (09:01) g'day
Francisco Arias: (09:02) thank you everyone, we are closing the room now
