Arnt's example is what I was conceiving.  I get a bunch of email addresses [STORE] and either perform the sending myself [PROCESS] or outsource it.  Any replies and bounce-backs are managed by somebody else, or maybe not at all.

Is it commonplace or interesting?  I don't know.  It does seem easier to implement, but only if it is useful to the website owner.

It's quite common to have separate systems these days.

Mail from "the website", or from the database/backend/jobs, is sent using something like ActionMailer via Amazon SES, or Sendgrid, or one of those ESPs. Mail to/from customer service is received into Zendesk, perhaps via Gmail, Office365 or a mail serer, and replies from Zendesk go back out via.. I think Zendesk uses Amazon SES? Caan't remember.
