Evan: Further to your report, please note that we have started talking about two different 'phases' of EAI Readiness for software. Being able to 'Send To' and 'Receive From' EAI addresses is considered Phase 1 EAI Ready. Being able to 'Host' an EAI Address is considered Phase 2 EAI Ready. We need to be clear in the evaluation results (and the process). An application that is Phase 1 EAI Ready is indeed an achievement and we want to note that. An application that is also Phase 2 EAI Ready is a splendid achievement, but there are far fewer services or software that claim to support this. I would be surprised if an application is Phase 2 EAI ready and not Phase 1 EAI Ready, but I suppose that's possible. D Don Hollander Secretary General - UASG Skype: Don_Hollander
Does this distinction make sense for MUA’s? Paul

Hypothetically I could imagine it, but I would be pretty surprised to find a standalone MUA which handled EAI mail to and from other people without also handling an EAI mailbox. Webmail is different. Gmail and Hotmail/Outlook both are phase 1 at this point. R's, John

Right, and allowing Unicode in the configuration for your own address(es). Like I said, it seems unlikely that someone would do the work to handle remote EAI addresses in an MUA and not also handle local.

By my reading an MUA would be entirely Phase 1 since it isn't "hosting" anything per se. ISTM the Phase 2 distinction applies mainly to mail service providers, software with an MDA component, and IMAP/POP servers. That seems overly pedantic. If an MUA can send mail to bb@exmple.com, that's phase 1. If it can handle the mailbox for bb@exmple.com, and send and receive mail for that address, that's phase 2. Like I said, it seems unlikely that to do one but not the other, but it's different code in different places in the MUA, so I would want to check and see what they did. R's, John
